Given Manchester City lost their two opening games of the season, it’s quite unthinkable that they would be second-in-line for the Women’s Super League title, just weeks before the season’s end.
But, Gareth Taylor has seen his side wrestle through the doubters. With a 16-game unbeaten streak, in all competitions, since late September right through to early February, it has ushered his side back into the title race, the team creeping up in the shadows, unnoticed but ready to pounce. City are a team you can not cast aside, especially with record-breaking striker waking among his ranks; Khadija Shaw, and the whole team effort scoring goals in the 6-2 win over West Ham on Sunday.
With her help (17 goals out of 41 total tally), the Sky Blues are three points behind league leaders and local rivals United. They remain a point ahead of last year's champions Chelsea, who have two games in hand, while also sitting three points ahead of Arsenal who also have a game in hand.
Their most convincing league win to date was yesterday's 6-2 thrashing of West Ham at the Academy Stadium to help bolster their goal difference and dominance domestically. City now face Reading, Liverpool, United and Everton on their quest for WSL success and to clinch a Champions League qualification spot.
While over the other side of Manchester, United continue to be top of the pile in what looks to be their most successful season to date. Marc Skinner's side have suffered only two losses - both against Chelsea - they also have a whopping goal difference of 38, scoring 15 more than second-place City, and even 10 more than Chelsea.
At the other end of the field, Skinner’s stalwart back four coordinated by Mary Earps has kept 12 clean sheets out of 18 ties, oh, what a squad he has!
With these kinds of performances, the title race will surely go down to the wire, especially since the top two have their derby on the penultimate weekend of the season. What was left 1-1 at the Etihad in December, all is to play for, in May.
