Now a few months into the season, Manchester United fans are incredibly happy with the players that the club bought in the summer. Casemiro is finally showing his world-class quality on a regular basis, Antony is menacing opposition defenses and getting on the scoresheet and Lisandro Martinez has already fast become a cult hero.
However bar the acquisition of Tyrell Malacia, some fans may argue that although the players have hit the ground running, the business done by United was uninspired. And this falls at the doorstep of Director Football John Murtough.
United and Murtough have spent much of the past 12 months getting the club's backroom in order to provide Erik ten Hag with all the support he needs in order to succeed at Old Trafford. But is the recruitment staff as good as it can be?

United parted ways with their Chief Scout Jim Lawlor and also Head of Global Scouting Marcel Bout before Ten Hag's first transfer window and therefore a lot of the club's targets were suggested by Ten Hag and worked on by Murtough. This is not the ideal strategy moving forward.
To that end, United have been linked once again by reports in the English media with former Liverpool 'transfer guru' Michael Edwards. It follows reports earlier this year that claimed Edwards was seen as someone of interest to United's hierarchy.
Edwards was the mastermind in the transfer market behind Liverpool's resurgence in the 2010s under Jurgen Klopp. United's historic rivals would go on to win both the Premier League and Champions League, thank to the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohammed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, who were all brought in by Edwards.
If United were to appoint Edwards, the club would be expecting a similar result at Old Trafford. The club has not won the Champions League since 2008 and the Premier League since 2013; they have the manager in Ten Hag (hopefully) now he needs the squad.
Overall it's still unlikely whether United would look to bring in Edwards and if they did what that would mean for Murtough's future at the club, but it's clear he has the pedigree needed to succeed and would be a coup for the club if they were able to convince him to join.
