A popular city centre tea room has been named among the most beautiful cafes across the world. Known for their Alice in Wonderland inspired experience, Richmond Tea Rooms has found itself in the top 50 ‘most Instagrammable cafes in the world’.
The restaurant gained the attention of a global travel site Big 7 Travel, listed alongside the likes of Bali’s Penny Lane and Alfred Coffee, in LA.
The esteemed annual list features 50 destinations from nearly every continent, from a rainforest garden of waterfalls in Chiang Mai to overlooking the famous hot air balloons of Cappadocia.

The list sees four UK entries - one in Manchester, a second in Scotland and two in the capital, each one ranked on their popularity and ‘gram appeal’ - that’s how pretty they are, for anyone born before 1997.
Ranking 43rd in the list, Manchester’s Richmond Tea Rooms was praised for being ‘quintessentially British’, drawing inspiration from the famed Lewis Carroll novel.
The entry read: “Traditional afternoon tea in an Alice-in-Wonderland-inspired cafe? We’re sold. Bask in the retro setting while sipping on tea from vintage China teacups (or a bubbling glass of fizz) and tucking into dainty sandwiches.
“It doesn’t get much more quintessentially British than Richmond Tea Rooms!”
The restaurant is the brainchild of Nick Curtis and Andrew Underwood, offering a themed dining experience complemented with freshly prepared sandwiches, cakes and treats made in-house.
There are a bunch of magical places to perch and sip one of their weird and wonderful exotic and rare teas from around the world, from an enchanted forest area where you can dine under the twinkling lights in a woodland themed room, to the orangery which is the ‘most warming garden even on the rainiest of Manchester days’.
The team said: “We decided to think out of the box and create a different and unique space that still kept a heavy influence from Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland.' The restaurant prides itself on being a space of comfort for all people to enjoy afternoon tea, light meals, drinks, or for function hire.”
The UK-based hotspots joining Richmond Tea Rooms on the list were Dalloway Terrace, in London, at number 33, followed by Boat Shed Café at Lochgoilhead, Scotland, in at number 19.
But praised for its beautiful flower walls, marble tables and ‘pink, pink, pink’, it was EL&N topping the Great British list at number 13. Manchester is set to get its very own EL&N cafe at the Trafford Centre later this year.
