Manchester restaurant is recruiting a ‘cheese expert’ for £24k a year

Do you adore a Rocamadour? Do you know your Ticklemores from your Tunworths? Then a vacancy that’s just come up at a Manchester restaurant could be right up your street.

Masterchef winner Simon Wood is seeking a cheese expert for Homage, the dedicated cheese and wine room at his restaurant WOOD. The job is as a host, but you absolutely must know your cheeses and wines back to front.

“This is an exciting and unique opportunity for an individual who has a good knowledge for wine and a love of cheese,” reads the vacancy notice on LinkedIn. “This is a full-time role, working four days a week at our restaurant in Manchester City Centre.

“The role will require a high level of customer service and attention to detail, experience and knowledge of wine service and a genuine passion and enthusiasm for hospitality at its best. WSET knowledge is preferred but not essential.”

Perhaps it’s best to know if you’re applying that WSET is the Wine and Spirit Education Trust. Anyone interested in the role should drop a line to simon@woodmanchester.com

Wood launched the fine-dining cheese arm of his restaurant WOOD, on Jack Rosenthal Street, in 2021. It has seven tables on the upper floor of the restaurant, and focuses heavily on the cheese, with the courses paired with matching wines and liqueurs.

Wood said on opening: “WOOD has defied all expectations and brought unintimidating fine dining to Manchester. We are thrilled to be launching Homage as a complementary concept, and it will be a first of its kind in the UK.

“Homage is about connecting, sitting back and enjoying time with family, friends and colleagues, whether you're having a quiet taster and glass of wine with a friend you've not seen in years, or a business meeting over a long port with an associate.”
