Manchester derby VAR error was ‘significant’, Premier League tells clubs

  • Refereeing body Pro Ref has admitted that Erling Haaland’s winning goal for Manchester City against Manchester United should have been disallowed.
  • The 1-0 victory at Old Trafford was secured despite City playing with 10 men following Phil Foden’s first-half red card.
  • VAR allowed the goal after determining Haaland was onside, but failed to recognise that offside teammate Enzo Fernandez interfered with play.
  • Pro Ref acknowledged an error of judgement for not recommending an on-field review and contacted Manchester United following the match.
  • On Monday, The Times reported that a letter sent by the Premier League to its clubs said the VAR error was ‘significant’.
