Manchester City XI vs Real Madrid: Confirmed team news, starting lineup, injury latest for Champions League

Manchester City are without Kyle Walker as John Stones looks set to play at right-back for tonight’s Champions League semi-final first-leg meeting with Real Madrid.

Right-back Walker has not played since the goalless draw with Atletico in Spain due to an ankle injury, but defensive colleague Stones, who missed Saturday’s 5-1 demolition of Watford due to muscle tightness suffered in the win over Brighton three days before, is fit to start.

Elsewhere, Joao Cancelo is suspended, meaning Pep Guardiola has had to shift Stones out of position. Nathan Ake is on the bench while Kevin De Bruyne starts, after both played through injuries against Watford.

The former Barcelona boss paid respect to Madrid - once his biggest rivals as a player and manager - ahead of the heavyweight semi-final tie.

“Their history speaks for itself,” he said. “We have the desire to compete against them. For us playing against them is an incredible test and we want to try it. Suffer when we suffer, stick together. Try to do as best as possible.

“It would be the same against Bayern or Barcelona. They are a team many times in this position. In the last decade we were almost never here and now we are, which is good. Reaching the final will be a good lesson for us that’s for sure.”

Gabriel Jesus is rewarded for his goalscoring heroics against Watford with a start, and is part of a fluid front three alongside Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez.

Man City XI: Ederson, Stones, Dias, Laporte, Zinchenko, Rodrigo, De Bruyne, Bernardo, Mahrez, Foden, Jesus

Subs: Steffen, Carson, Ake, Sterling, Gundogan, Grealish, Fernandinho, Egan-Riley, Mbete, Palmer, McAtee, Lavia
