Manchester City win another trophy. It should have been inevitable given the superiority Pep Guardiola’s team have over, pretty much, every other team last season. City are treble-winners and won the elusive Champions League for the first time. They came into the Uefa Super Cup as massive favourites but needed a penalty shootout to get the job done.
Sevilla struck first. They were the better team in the opening 45 minutes as City failed to get up to the tempo of the match. Youssef En-Nesyri leapt above Nathan Ake to meet Marcos Acuna’s cross and nod the Spaniards in front. That goal saw them go into half-time with the lead but it woke City up.
Guardiola’s men then pushed on in the second half and equalised through Cole Palmer. Like En-Nesyri he slotted home a fine header and drew City level. The match went to a penalty shootout and the Champions League winners were perfect. They scored all five before Nemanja Gudelj missed his spot kick and gifted them the trophy.
