Manchester City stance on Paul Pogba transfer links as Pep Guardiola handed opportunity

Here are your Manchester City headlines for Saturday, May 7.

Manchester City stance on Paul Pogba

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is an option for Manchester City this summer as Pep Guardiola looks to strengthen his squad. Speculation over Pogba's United future continues to swirl and a recent report from the Daily Mail suggested the Frenchman could move to United's cross-city rivals.

MEN Sport understands Pogba is merely one possible central midfield target that Guardiola and City could pursue this summer. After coasting to their third Premier League title in four seasons, City were priced out of a move for England striker Harry Kane last summer, but they did manage to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa.

Real Madrid defeat hands Pep Guardiola rare opportunity

Since the Manchester City squad was overhauled for the 2017/18 season, there have only been five first-team players signed across the last four summer transfer windows, meaning that it has been essentially the same squad working under the manager. That has worked to their advantage in subsequent seasons, meaning Pep Guardiola has been through nearly every situation with his players at least once.

It helped in the pandemic season for instance when training was limited, with the coach being able to trust the group to pull through and carry out his instructions to win the league again. And as Liverpool, Arsenal, Thomas Tuchel and Ralf Rangnick (albeit not yet Chelsea or Manchester United) have also concluded, stability is the best platform for progress.
