Manchester Airport issue update after runway closed for emergency repairs

A runway at Manchester Airport that had to be closed for emergency repairs is now back open again.

Runway One had to be shut yesterday (Thursday) because of a 'surface defect'. Some flights, including arrivals and departures, were delayed or diverted because of the issue.

The airport said yesterday that at least three flights had been diverted to Liverpool John Lennon due to only one runway being in use. This morning, an airport spokesperson said repair work was carried out overnight.

It is now back in use and the airport is operating as normal. A statement issued by the airport yesterday said: "This morning we identified a surface defect on Runway One during one of our regular routine inspections.

"Safety will always be our top priority, so as a precaution, we are temporarily operating all flights from Runway Two while we urgently rectify the issue. This may result in some delays to both arrivals and departures, and we apologise to passengers for any inconvenience and thank them for their patience.”
