Spanish manager Marcelino, who rejected Nottingham Forest, has missed out on the opportunity to become Luis Enrique's successor as Spain coach.
Spain were eliminated from the World Cup last 16 after falling to defeat against Morocco. Morocco reached the quarter finals of the competition for the first time in their history when they beat Spain 3-0 on penalties following a 0-0 draw after extra time earlier this week.
Enrique, who had mulled over a decision on his future for the past few days, confirmed on Thursday he had left his role as Spain boss after four years in charge. Marcelino was one of three potential candidates to take over, along with Roberto Martinez and Luis de la Fuente.

In the end, de la Fuente was announced as the new man to succeed Enrique. The board of directors are set to approve the appointment next Monday.
Marcelino had turned down Forest's approach to succeed Steve Cooper in October in the hope of eventually becoming the Spain coach. Marca journalist Pedro Morata, previously said: "As far as I have absolutely confirmed, Marcelino turned down the possibility of coaching Brighton and Nottingham Forest.
"He wants to be the Spain coach. Marcelino is certainly one of those who is sure to be on the shortlist of the Royal Spanish Federation."
