Man with 'dreadful record' stole booze from his dad on Christmas Eve

When Mitchell Rogers popped around to his dad's on Christmas Eve instead of leaving a present he stole bottles of booze. And now he's been banned from having all contact with his father for three years.

Rogers appeared for sentence at Bristol Crown Court today (Wednesday, February 22). The 33-year-old, of Tewther Road in Hartcliffe, pleaded guilty to theft from his father as well as three thefts from shops and two assaults on shop staff.

Judge William Hart jailed him for 34 weeks. He told Rogers: "You have a pretty dreadful record. I'm told you've got ability and intellect, I hope you start using it productively."

Rogers was handed a three-year restraining order banning him from all contact with his father. He was also told to pay a victim surcharge.

Meabh McGee, prosecuting, said in November last year Rogers stole ten bottles of wine from a Coop store in Fishponds. In that raid he threatened to hit a member of staff over the head with a bottle, the court heard.

Rogers also admitted stealing three bottles of wine and a bottle of vodka from the B&M store at Channons Hill retail park in November last year. He further admitted stealing four bottles of spirits from Iceland in Avonmeads - where he caught a member of staff to the face when he swung a bottle. He also admitted letting himself into his dad's home and stealing two bottles of whisky, a bottle of rum, a bottle of vodka and a bottle of Baileys from a table. He was arrested and made no comment to police.

Alun Williams, defending, said his remorseful client had a troubled childhood and consumed drugs from the age of 14. Mr Williams added that Rogers' mum was serving a prison sentence for murder and Rogers was medicated for anxiety and depression.
