Man wielded axe and dumped it in garden during 'ugly incident' in Mansfield

A man has been sentenced for wielding an axe in "an ugly incident" in Mansfield.

Police were called to a large scale disturbance in Welbeck Street on July 16, 2020.

Sean Stewart, 31, was on his bike just before 5am when he became involved in the incident - along with Gavin Pearson and Charlene Kerr.

The court heard the pair - who have already been sentenced for their roles in the incident - were seen on CCTV walking down the street brandishing weapons and shouting 'come on you peados'.

Pearson was seen pursuing Stewart with an axe in his hand - Stewart was later seen on CCTV to swing a weapon towards Pearson and Kerr.

Police arrived and they saw a man running from Welbeck Street - they followed him and found he had an axe which he had taken from one of the others and had been dumped in a garden.

Stewart was also found to have a lock knife on him in person.

Simon Eckersley, mitigating, said: "He [Stewart] had been knocked off his bike and he [Stewart] got on top of him [Pearson] as he [Stewart] was potentially going to be robbed of his bike.

"In any view, he [Stewart] was not the instigator and was able to disarm him [Pearson]. He [Stewart] didn't use the weapon to injure anyone. When police arrived he [Stewart] was very distressed and fully co-operated with them."

Judge Sampson QC told Stewart: "This was an ugly incident.

"I am going to suspend this sentence which does pass the custodial threshold - I am giving you credit for your plea."

Stewart, of Lindley Street in Mansfield, pleaded guilty to affray and possession of an offensive weapon and was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment, suspended for 21 months.

He must also carry out 15 rehabilitation days, 150 hours of unpaid work and pay a victim surcharge.

Gavin Pearson and Charlene Kerr, who are 42 years old and from Welbeck Street, Mansfield, pleaded guilty to affray and having an offensive weapon, and both were given ten months in prison, suspended for 21 months, 15 days each on a rehabilitation requirement and a "thinking skills programme".
