The man who is the inspiration behind Stranger Things character Eddie Munson has said he is "tremendously honoured" by the touching tribute.
Eddie, played by Joseph Quinn, features heavily in season four of the hit Netflix series and is certainly a fan favourite.
At the beginning of season four, Eddie is witness to Chrissy's brutal death, which takes place in his home on the trailer park, and he ends up going on the run as he knows he'll be blamed for her gruesome murder.
However, many viewers will be unaware that Eddie is actually based on a real-life person and he goes by the name of Damien Echols.
The official Twitter account for Netflix Geeked confirmed that Eddie and his storyline concerning the Hellfire Club took inspiration from a documentary called Paradise Lost.
The film, which was released in 1996, follows the trials of the West Memphis Three, three teenagers who were convicted of murder in 1994, with the prosecution claiming that they were part of a Satanic cult ritual killing.
After years of campaigning, with support from various celebrities and new forensic evidence released in 2007, the three men were finally released from prison in 2011 after serving 18 years behind bars.
Echols had previously been sentenced to death, while Jessie Misskelley Jr and Jason Baldwin both originally received life sentences.
Taking to Twitter last week, a fan of Echols tweeted an article about his link to Stranger Things and asked: "Damien, how do you feel about this character being created based on you? I haven't seen this so I don't know how they're portraying you."
Echols retweeted it and replied: "In case anyone else is wondering, I was tremendously honored by it. And I greatly appreciate all the new eyes and hearts it has brought to our fight.
"I was watching it at 3 am in the morning, and when I heard the very first chords from Master of Puppets, my heart exploded," he added.
Matt and Ross Duffer, who created Stranger Things, recently confirmed in an interview that Eddie is based on Damien.
The Duffer brothers said that "something we really wanted to get into this year was the Satanic Panic".
Ross continued: "So that brought us back to the Paradise Lost documentary series with the [West] Memphis Three, and it brought us back to Damien Echols.
"We really wanted that character who’s a metalhead, he’s into Dungeons & Dragons, he’s ultimately a true nerd at heart. But from an outsider’s point of view, they may go, ‘This is someone that is scary'. So that’s really where the idea for Eddie came in."
Stranger Things Seasons 1 - 4 are available to watch on Netflix now.
