It was one of the most notorious fraudster stories of its time, fascinating the British public. Most will remember when John Darwin plotted with his first wife, Anne, to swindle nearly £700,000 through life insurance and pensions by faking his own death in a canoe in the North Sea.
Now, 20 years later, the story is about to re-enter our lives in an ITV drama detailing the plan. While viewers ready themselves to relive the tale, the man at the centre of it has been spotted carrying out mundane activities in the Philippines.
Darwin, now 71, is pictured doing some shopping at the aptly named Wilcon hardware store, reports The Mirror. Alongside the TV drama about the former teacher and prisons officer, he himself is writing a book about his story.
