Man went to Subway after night out and woke up in hospital with detectives at bedside

A man who went to get a Subway after a night out woke up in hospital with two detectives at his bedside. Cameron Tunstall, 22, went to various bars and clubs after having a meal with friends on Friday, May.

The youngster from Woodchurch in Liverpool decided to have a late night Subway, visiting the shop at around 4.15am. However, he ended up being rushed to hospital after suffering two bleeds on the brain in an attack outside the shop - something he has no recollection of, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The last thing Cameron is said to have remembered was being in a local bar, Teddys, before waking up in the medical facility and being questioned by police over a gang of two men and a woman who were said to have been involved in the assault.

He was found unconscious on the ground by police responding to the incident, as he retraced his steps through bank transactions that showed he had purchased food from Subway and was in all likelihood heading for a taxi home.

He told the Echo: "I know [we went to Teddy's] because when I had woken up I had a picture with a friend in a photobooth in there. That's how I figured out we went to Teddy's.

"From what I gathered from my bank transactions, I went to Subway and that's where I read on the ECHO it happened. I woke up, I think, quite early yesterday morning.

"I don't really know timestamps because when I actually woke up, I was just in a room with two detectives who were speaking to me about what happened."

A 25-year-old woman was arrested near where the attack occurred and was taken into custody for questioning by police. Cameron suffered damage to his eye in the assault alongside the two bleeds.

He added: "I have been going through eye steroids and they have been putting that in my eye about four times a day. My sight has improved a lot with it though, it is still a bit blurry when I close my right eye, but it is a lot better and I can keep it open a lot more today than I actually could yesterday.

"I couldn't open it at all yesterday without it being really painful."

Cameron was attacked in a separate incident in Liverpool last year (@Cameron Tunstall/Liverpool Echo)

It wasn't the first time the youngster had been assaulted in Liverpool city centre, with a a man hitting him near Pop World last year in another incident that caused him to fall and bang his head.

He was rushed to hospital for his injuries but brain scans were then sent to major neurology facility Walton Centre with further tests showing that Cameron had a brain tumour.

He added: "My friends were shocked about it because this actually happened last year as well in August. Last time it happened it was outside Pop World and I was walking past there to get a taxi again.

"Some man turned round and hit me and I had fallen back and hit my head but that time when I was taken to the Royal, this was on August 28 last year, they did some scans to make sure there was no internal bleeding or head injury.

"But they ended up having to send the scans over to the Walton Centre and they found a brain tumour on the back of my head. I have kind of come to terms with it now and I obviously don't have the best luck on a night out apparently.

"I am going to try and not go on them as frequently now, as I am obviously not having the best of luck."

Police are now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who saw the offenders running away from the scene, to come forward. The force are also keen to talk to taxi drivers from the nearby Hackney cab rank on Hanover Street, as they could have vital dashcam footage, which could help identify the two men in question.

Anyone who can assist the investigation is asked to DM @MerPolCC or message Merseyside Police Contact Centre on Facebook, quoting reference 0152 of 6 May. You can also pass information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
