Man went from working two jobs to owning coffee shop rivalling Starbucks

A coffee shop owner who once worked two jobs to ensure his business was a success now has branches rivalling Starbucks.

Jack Brewitt, 28, is the CEO and co-founder of 92 Degrees which has coffee shops in the city centre, Manchester and Scotland. It first opened in 2015 and only two months later Jack was ready to open more shops, however his co-founders didn’t agree.

He was left with no choice but to work two jobs in a bid to save up and became the majority shareholder in the business. Doing this meant he was soon able to open a second shop on Jamaica Street in the Baltic Triangle.

Speaking to the ECHO, he said: "I thought I need to figure out how to take this business further because more communities and more people deserve to taste our coffee.

“I knew the best thing for me to do what I wanted to do with 92 Degrees was to work other jobs, save every penny I can and buy out people who didn't want to be a part of the journey moving forward.”

Although his business is now a success story, Jack admits it has been a long road to get to where he is today. He said: “It was a bit of a crazy founder story because I was so young when we started, I was 20 and I didn’t have the capabilities at all to run a business.

“It forced me to learn from other businesses and realise what it takes. When I was ready to take control of the business in 2018, I was really prepared and was able to do what was needed to grow the business properly.”

Jack feared the opening of a Starbucks Coffee across the road from 92 Degrees would collapse his business, but he claims his sales actually increased.

He has praised scousers for continuing to support their local businesses and helping to keep his going.

Jack added: “I think being a scouser, we have no issue supporting home-grown businesses, we love it and breathe it.

“Our business wouldn't have existed if we didn't start in this city. I still put that down to the people of Liverpool.”

Moving forward, 92 Degrees has confirmed the launch of a further eight sites with new locations across the city and in Scotland, Manchester and London.

Jack said: "We have targeted doubling our store locations each year for the next two years and we are on track to close 2022 with at least 15 store locations.”

“We are competing against companies born out of London that grow very quickly. I think that being a Northern business, being a business in Liverpool, I like the challenge of taking them on.

"Providing a warm space for people in the community whilst providing a good cup of coffee”
