Manchester United conceded a last-minute equaliser as Erik ten Hag's side wasted the chance to make it four wins from four on their pre-season tour.
A volleyed strike from Jadon Sancho and an own goal from Matty Cash looked to have been enough to give ten Hag's side victory over Steven Gerrard's Villa, who had pulled a goal back through substitute Leon Bailey.
But a corner from Bailey was headed in by fellow sub Calum Chambers, with United goalkeeper David De Gea static on his line as the ball flew past him with the final action of the game.
A crowd of 58,228 at the Optus Stadium watched United bring the curtain down on their two-and-a-half week tour. Here, Mirror Football assesses the winners and losers from the game in Perth...
WINNERS
Erik ten Hag
Throughout the pre-season tour, Ten Hag's mantra has been getting United to play “proactive” football. Never was that more evident than in the 25th minute with United's opening goal, a cleverly-worked move, which started from the right, switched to the left and ended with a fine volleyed finish. Diogo Dalot fed the ball to Anthony Martial, who in turn found Bruno Fernandes.
The United playmaker funnelled the ball to Marcus Rashford, who paused before finding Luke Shaw on the overlap. Shaw picked out Jadon Sancho, who applied a clinical finish to make it 1-0.
As team-build up goals go, it doesn't get any better, with Ten Hag indicating his approval from the technical area. For the new United boss, the tour could not have gone much better, although he will have been angry at the way his side conceded so late on to draw the game.
Jadon Sancho
England winger Sancho endured a tough first season at United following his £75million move from Borussia Dortmund, but has looked a different player in pre-season, under new boss Ten Hag. Sancho, who has lost his England place and is desperate to win it back in time for the World Cup this winter, plundered his third goal of the tour to put United in front against Villa.
Like so many of United's players, Sancho's confidence and form has been restored under ten Hag, with goals against Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Villa. The challenge now for Sancho is to take that pre-season belief into the campaign itself, when United host Brighton on August 7 in their Premier League opener.
Harry Maguire
The United skipper endured a horrendous time last season and has been booed on tour, but Maguire has shown his strength of character to block out the abuse and perform to a high standard. Ten Hag's show of support and faith in Maguire, by retaining him as captain, looks to have paid off, with the 29-year-old showing signs he may be able to rediscover the form that made United pay Leicester £80million for him back in 2019.
In a 66-minute outing, Maguire did little wrong, and produced a vital block to keep out an angled effort from Leon Bailey, after the Villa attacker had rounded David De Gea. This is a huge season for Maguire, one in which he will be under relentless scrutiny, but so far he is progressing in the right direction.
LOSERS
Donny van de Beek
Van de Beek, United's £40million conundrum, started his first game of the tour but was peripheral throughout. United's best moves going forward did not involve Van de Beek, who wasted his chance to remind his former Ajax boss of what he can offer in the middle.
Van de Beek lost the ball persistently and offered nothing going forward in his 66-minute outing. With the start of the new season just two weeks away, Van de Beek can expect to find himself in a familiar position at United – on the bench.
Victor Lindelof
With Harry Maguire having retained the captaincy and new signing Lisandro Martinez going straight into the team on the left side of central defence, Lindelof will be the player to make way.
The Sweden international did little to push his case to start the season, backing off from Leon Bailey and allowing the Villa man to curl a shot past him and into the far corner of the United goal. With Raphael Varane also ahead of him in the defensive pecking order, Lindrlof is set to find himself fourth-choice centre-back by the start of the season.
David De Gea
In an interview ahead of the game, De Gea, a four-time winner of United's Player of the Year award, said he did not want to lift the trophy again next season, because it will mean the club have had a poor campaign.
If the way De Gea played against Villa is an indicator of the season ahead, he can have no concerns at winning the individual accolade. Just as he was when Crystal Palace's Joel Ward headed past him in Melbourne, De Gea was static on his line as Calum Chambers nodded the ball past him with the final action of the game, to snatch a 2-2 draw.
