Man Utd vs Tottenham live: Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes secure victory at Old Trafford

Manchester United made it four wins from four matches under Michael Carrick’s leadership as they swept Tottenham aside with a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford.

Cristian Romero was shown a straight red card in the first half as Tottenham struggled to assert themselves on the game with the hosts controlling possession and unafraid to shoot.

The opening goal came courtesy of a slick corner move as Bruno Fernandes found Kobbie Mainoo in the box before he pulled it back to Bryan Mbeumo for a guided finish.

With Spurs down to 10-men they offered little threat to the hosts who mounted wave after wave of attack on Thomas Frank’s defence before the visitors were finally broken late in the game.

Diogo Dalot’s cross from the right wing picked out Bruno Fernandes who nudged the ball home to end any thoughts of a Tottenham equaliser and confirm United’s spot in the top four for another week.

Luckless Thomas Frank rues what might have been as Bryan Mbeumo punishes Spurs

15:59 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Thomas Frank may have been vindicated. Sadly for him, he was beaten in the process. Under Frank, Bryan Mbeumo scored 20 Premier League goals for Brentford last season. When the Dane joined Tottenham, he hoped to lure Mbeumo across London with him.

Instead Mbeumo joined Manchester United, and with a certain inevitability, he, along with Bruno Fernandes, duly scored in their 2-0 victory over Spurs. He has struck home and away against Tottenham this season. Spurs also targeted Eberechi Eze, who went to Arsenal and got a hat-trick against them.

How is Romero feeling?

14:57 , Mike Jones

"He is disappointed because he knows this red card could have been avoided so he apologised,” said Vicario.

“He is our captain and today he made a mistake but we know the player he is and he is going to come back stronger and help us massively throughout the season."

More from Vicario:

14:53 , Mike Jones

"It depends how you see things in life [are Spurs in a relegation battle]. The reality is that in terms of results we have struggled a lot. Two wins in the last 16 is not acceptable for this football club but we don't have to forget how we are trying to push ourselves in tough conditions.

“This is the reality. Of course we have had a brilliant Champions League campaign so far and playing every three games I have already played 36 games and I am proud of myself for doing this but for the outfield players it is tough, so it depends how you see things in life."

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario speaking to TNT Sports:

14:50 , Mike Jones

"It is so tough. Especially when you come to play in a stadium like this one. But I am proud of my team-mates because we showed a lot of resilience and hard work throughout the game. It is tough when you are one man less to try and overturn a result that is already 1-0.

"I am proud of my team-mates, so so proud, because they put all the character and effort in today and to do it 10 v 11 is a massive reward for what we want to show for our football club, for our fans and of course the result is another defeat which is tough to accept but today - we need to take the positive that can take us into Tuesday's game."

Manchester United and Michael Carrick win again as Tottenham are seen off

14:49 , Mike Jones

Michael Carrick oversaw a fourth straight victory as revitalised Manchester United capitalised on Cristian Romero’s red card to extend Tottenham’s wait for a first Premier League win of 2026.

The Red Devils have been reborn since the short-term appointment of their former midfielder, whose honeymoon period continued as triumphs against Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham were followed up on Saturday lunchtime.

Manchester United and Michael Carrick win again as Tottenham are seen off

Man Utd now three points off second

14:39 , Mike Jones

Four wins in a row for Michael Carrick’s men sees them just three points behind Manchester City in second place.

They are still nine behind the league leaders Arsenal and will need the teams above them to continue dropping points if they hope to move further up the table.

13 games left is still time to move up but Arsenal in particular look very consistent.

No wins for Spurs in 2026

14:35 , Mike Jones

Tottenham still haven’t won a Premier League match in 2026 and we’re now in February.

Thomas Frank’s men are under real pressure and remain in the bottom half of the table with their run of horrible form continuing.

Michael Carrick's perfect start continues

14:29 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Michael Carrick's perfect start continues.

“Thomas Frank is beaten in part by a goal from a player he coached at Brentford, in Bryan Mbeumo, which may rather sum up his fortunes at Tottenham.

“United's total of 23 shots spoke to their attacking intent but Spurs may see similarities with their December defeat to Liverpool, another match shaped by a first-half red card.

“But it is seven league games without a win for them now. The team who finished 17th last season could be 15th tomorrow.”

Playing Fernandes further forward makes him more productive

14:15 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Bruno Fernandes had got an assist in every game since Ruben Amorim's departure. None today so far, but he has got a goal.

“It's almost as though playing him further forward makes him more productive.”

GOAL! Man Utd 2-0 Tottenham (Bruno Fernandes, 81')

14:13 , Mike Jones

That should be that!

Diogo Dalot whips a cross into the box from the right wing.

Chance to equalise coming up.

Dragusin launches the abll into the box with Van de Ven and Solanke swinging at the ball but neither managing to get on the end of it.

Are United entering Casemiro time?

14:02 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Are United entering Casemiro time? He rarely plays 90 minutes, and they have a game against West Ham on Tuesday to consider.

“Yet they are far more liable to concede when he goes off, as Fulham's comeback last week showed.”

Man Utd 1-0 Tottenham

14:00 , Mike Jones

69 mins: Disallowed goal!

Cunha collects the ball after a poor clearance from Vicario.

He passes it to Fernandes who plays a pass round the corner to Amad.

Amad square into the middle and Cunha scores!

But, Fernandes was offside in the build up so it doesn’t count.

Man Utd 1-0 Tottenham

13:58 , Mike Jones

68 mins: Shaw dribbles the ball down the left wing and slips a pass into Cunha who makes an underlapping run into the box.

A debut for Souza

13:50 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

A debut for the Brazilian left-back Souza, one of Spurs' January signings.

“It is also made all the intriguing by the reality that, after signing him, they tried to get Andy Robertson from Liverpool.

“That didn't happen but it did pose the question of what that would have meant for Souza.”

Man Utd 1-0 Tottenham

13:50 , Mike Jones

60 mins: An error from Shaw sees him slide the ball across to Xavi Simons who shoots a curls his effort just wide of the post!

Souza, one of Spurs’ January signings, is brought on to replace him.

Tottenham are really struggling now. Pressure is on Thomas Frank.

Man Utd 1-0 Tottenham

13:44 , Mike Jones

54 mins: Destiny udogie is down for Spurs and needs some treatment.

If he needs to go off as well then Spurs will be in dire straits. They play again on Tuesday (I think) and already have a growing list of injuries.

Tottenham have been flat since the red card

13:41 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Tottenham have been understandably flat since the red card.

“They have plenty of considerations now: down to 10 men, they need to find a way back into the game, with the risk that if go too attacking, they get hammered.

“And they play again on Tuesday, so a stretched squad could do with retaining some freshness.”

Man Utd 1-0 Tottenham

13:41 , Mike Jones

50 mins: Disallowed goal!

Fernandes recycles the ball with a chip into the far side of the box.

Luke Shaw meets it and guides a pass across goal where Amad taps it in at the back post.

The offside flag goes up immediately and Amad has no complaints.

Man Utd 1-0 Tottenham

13:38 , Mike Jones

48 mins: Tottenham came back from two goals down to Manchester City in the second half of their clash last weekend.

Of course, they still had 11 players on the pitch then but the visitors aren’t out of this match just yet.

Manchester United get the ball rolling once more at Old Trafford.

No changes from either manager at the break.

Man Utd 1-0 Tottenham

13:16 , Mike Jones

45 mins: Tottenham need the whistle and the break to half-time.

Man Utd are sitting pretty with a goal and a man advantage.

Amad is booked for a tackle on Xavi Simons. It is a foul, he arrives late and takes out Xavi’s legs.

Five minutes of added time to play in the first half.

Man Utd 1-0 Tottenham

13:13 , Mike Jones

42 mins: Man Utd have a whole heap of confidence flowing through them now.

A long ball comes over the top of the Spurs defence and Amad darts in behind looking to catch up to it.

Vicario comes quickly off his line though and scoops up the ball.

Inevitably Mbeumo scores

13:12 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Tottenham wanted Mbeumo last summer.

“And so, with a certain inevitability, he scores against them.”

GOAL! Man Utd 1-0 Tottenham (Bryan Mbeumo, 38')

13:10 , Mike Jones

Wow!

Bruno Fernandes has a shot deflected behind for a corner which is rolled into the feet of Kobbie Mainoo.

He pulls it back to Bryan Mbeumo who guides it beautifully into the far bottom corner!

Man Utd 0-0 Tottenham

13:07 , Mike Jones

35 mins: Manchester United have impressed in this first half and Romero’s red card have given them a big advantage in this game.

Recently though, United have struggled to break teams down. They should win this match from here but can they get past a Spurs defence that will sit back now?

Man Utd 0-0 Tottenham

13:05 , Mike Jones

32 mins: Thomas Frank reacts to the red card by making an immediate substitution.

Wilson Odobert is sacrificed to bring on another defender, Radu Dragusin.

From the free kick the ball is flicked into the box where there’s a clash of heads and a stop in play.

Romero on Casemiro

13:03 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Romero on Casemiro: Argentina on Brazil or an accident?

“Either way, Tottenham are down to 10.

“Romero has a second red card of the season and a terrible disciplinary record.”

RED CARD! Man Utd 0-0 Tottenham

13:01 , Mike Jones

29 mins: Cristian Romero has been sent off!

He follows through in a challenge on Casemiro and lands, studs up, on the Brazilian’s ankle.

Casemiro looks in pain after the tackle and the referee decides there is enough force and intent to send off the Tottenham captain!

13:00 , Mike Jones

29 mins: The first yellow card goes to Destiny Udogie who grabs hold of Amad’s shoulders and drags him to the deck.

Fernandes plays a quick free kick and gives the ball to Kobbie Mainoo who dribbles into the box but gets tackled before he can create an opportunity.

Man Utd 0-0 Tottenham

12:58 , Mike Jones

26 mins: Well now, Cunha is brought down just outside the box from Sarr and makes sure he lands in the area to appeal for a penalty.

The referee isn’t interested and the ball rolls to Fernandes who whacks a shot at goal only for Romero to charge it down.

Man Utd 0-0 Tottenham

12:55 , Mike Jones

23 mins: Nearly!

Amad brings the ball forward and cuts in from the right before sliding a pass across to Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes tries to use the pace of the ball and guide it into the back of the net but his accuracy is slightly off and the effort rolls wide.

United have scored some special goals under Carrick

12:54 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Man United have scored some special goals from distance under Carrick already, particularly from Patrick Dorgu at Arsenal, and there does seem to be a policy of shooting from long range.

“Both Casemiro and Cunha have come close from about 25 yards.”

Man Utd 0-0 Tottenham

12:52 , Mike Jones

21 mins: Wow!

Luke Shaw throws the ball back in play on the left wing and United switch it quickly over to Diogo Dalot.

He drives up the pitch and squares the ball when Matheus Cunha calls for the ball.

Man Utd 0-0 Tottenham

12:49 , Mike Jones

18 mins: Destiny Udogie smashing a low pass across the face of goal and almost picks out Dominic Solanke only for United to scramble it away.

The ball gets flicked over to Fernandes who releases Bryan Mbeumo on the counter but a back tracking Joao Palhinha makes a fine sliding tackle to cut short the attack.

Man Utd 0-0 Tottenham

12:46 , Mike Jones

15 mins: Quarter of an hour played at Old Trafford and there’s been a response from Spurs.

Joao Palhinha and then Pape Sarr both take shots from outside the box but both efforts are blocked by United’s solid defence.

(REUTERS)

Man Utd 0-0 Tottenham

12:44 , Mike Jones

13 mins: At the other end of the pitch, Conor Gallagher gets on the right side of Lisandro Martinez and meets a threaded pass.

He toes a shot at goal but can;t beat Senne Lammens at the near post.

Man Utd 0-0 Tottenham

12:42 , Mike Jones

11 mins: Amad wins a free kick after being forced off the pitch by Micky van de Ven who looks hurt that the referee punished him.

United use the set piece to get men up the pitch and a bit of pinball in the Tottenham box results in a shot from Bruno Fernandes.

That effort is blocked but the ball rolls out to Casemiro who rattles one from ranges and forces Vicario into a leaping save!

Man Utd 0-0 Tottenham

12:39 , Mike Jones

8 mins: Man Utd have seen most of the possession over these opening minutes.

Amad Diallo is walking a little gingerly and may have an issue he is trying to run off.

The hosts haven’t won in this fixture since 2022 but bring the most confidence into this match.

Bryan Mbeumo is clattered by Romero in the middle of the pitch and is awarded a free kick.

Man Utd 0-0 Tottenham

United are unchanged, Tottenham playing with back four

12:34 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

United are unchanged in terms of personnel, but there is a shift.

“Matheus Cunha has started as the striker today, with Bryan Mbeumo on the left wing instead.

“And Tottenham have reverted to a back four, with Joao Palhinha in midfield.”

Man Utd 0-0 Tottenham

12:34 , Mike Jones

2 mins: Close! Tottenham push forward slightly too far and are caught by a quick break from the hosts.

Bruno Fernandes carries the ball through the middle before slipping a pass into the left side of the box towards Bryan Mbeumo.

He takes a touch and shoots but fizzes his shot wide of the target.

Kick off! Man Utd 0-0 Tottenham

12:32 , Mike Jones

However, five of Spurs’ seven league wins this season have come away from home.

How the almost irreplaceable Casemiro exposes Man United’s new vulnerability

12:00 , Richard Jolly

The Stretford End songbook was focused on two defensive midfielders. The song celebrating Michael Carrick was, like the man himself, brought back from the past. Yet after the final whistle, after an injury-time winner, the name sung longest and loudest was that of Casemiro.

He has started his long goodbye at Old Trafford. He has been talisman and transformative presence, laughing stock and fading force. Now it seems the Brazilian will go as a cult hero, and a man who will leave a sizeable gap in the midfield.

How the almost irreplaceable Casemiro exposes Man United’s new vulnerability

The first goal could be crucial

11:55 , Mike Jones

Only bottom two sides Burnley (23) and Wolves (21) have conceded more first half goals than Tottenham (18) in the Premier League this season.

Spurs are winless in all 10 of their league games when behind at the break this term (drawn three, lost seven) and are unbeaten in all six when leading at half-time (won five, drawn one).

Peaking at the right time

11:50 , Mike Jones

Manchester United are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League games (won four, drawn three) and have won all three since Michael Carrick returned as manager.

The Red Devils last won four in a row in February 2024 under Erik ten Hag, while they last had a longer run without defeat in February 2022 (8 under Ralf Rangnick).

Are Spurs Man Utd's new bogey team?

11:45 , Mike Jones

Tottenham are unbeaten in their last eight meetings with Manchester United in all competitions (five wins, three draws).

It’s their longest ever run without defeat against them, while in the 21st century only Chelsea have gone longer against the Red Devils (12 between 2012 and 2017).

Twice in a row?

11:40 , Mike Jones

Tottenham won this exact fixture 3-0 last season – only once have they won consecutive away games against Man Utd in the Premier League, doing so in January 2014.

Cristian Romero hits out at ‘disgraceful’ Tottenham squad depth in apparent dig at hierarchy

11:30 , Will Castle

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has said it was “disgraceful” that the club only had “11 players available” for last weekend’s visit of Manchester City in an apparent dig at the Spurs hierarchy.

Romero was replaced at half-time of the clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium due to illness, with his side at that point completely lifeless and without much hope of turning around a two-goal deficit.

A fixture to evoke memories of a truly terrible Europa League final.

“Still, since then, Tottenham are fourth in the Champions League (sort of) and Manchester United fourth in the Premier League, which may or may not be a reflection of how good each is.

“Michael Carrick, formerly of Tottenham, names an unchanged team for his fourth game in charge of United.

“Spurs have Micky van de Ven fit again and Cristian Romero captaining them after his latest broadside at the board.”

Carrick on threat of Spurs

11:06 , Mike Jones

The Manchester United head coach said: "They certainly bring a challenge. I think you can see especially the way they finished the game the other day [against Manchester City]. They have had players injured and ins and outs, and a lot of changes to the team which makes things a lot more challenging, a lot more difficult from their perspective.

“But they're getting players back. They've got really good attackers who look to stretch the backline and play forward and attack the box an awful lot. It's something we've got be aware of.

“A slightly different game to maybe what we have played over recent weeks in some ways, but we're looking forward to it. We're in a good place, the boys have worked well again this week.

“Again, feet on the ground, let's not get carried away with what has gone on. It's about what's next. A big challenge ahead but we're looking forward to it."

Patrick Dorgu has been a revelation under Michael Carrick but an injury means he’s set to be absent for most of the remaining season.

Carrick could not offer an specific return date but confirmed Dorgu would be missing for ‘weeks’.

“We’re working through it. It’ll definitely be a number of weeks,” the United boss explained of Dorgu’s injury.

“It will be a considerable period of time. He’s not going to be back in the next two or three weeks. To be more exact is a little bit difficult, at this moment.

"It could possibly be [10 weeks], we’re working through it. Certainly, we’re looking forward to getting him back as quickly as we can and getting on the pitch long before the end of the season.”

Frank on Tottenham's transfer business

10:48 , Mike Jones

Was January a good transfer window for the struggling Spurs?

“We signed Conor Gallagher, who is a quality player for the starting XI,” Thomas Frank explained.

“Of course, he needs to perform, and no one has promised any position, but we signed a quality player and we signed a young player for the future.

“I think if you compare that to a lot of the other Premier League clubs, I think that is very good. I think where we are is okay. We tried to do more, but it was not possible for whatever reason.

“I said it the whole time that it is very, very important that we take good decisions and are calm. It needs to be for the short-term and the long-term.”

“Djed [Spence] is getting closer, it will be touch and go and there's a good chance he'll be ready.”

Michael Carrick admits winning late at Old Trafford is ‘the best feeling’

Michael Carrick savoured “the best feeling” after watching Benjamin Sesko’s stoppage-time winner earn Manchester United a dramatic 3-2 victory over Fulham.

“It’s the best feeling I have to say,” Carrick said of winning the game in what he knew as ‘Fergie time’ when a player here. “Some of the best moments I’ve been part of here, you can dissect performances and there are plusses and not, and then you get a moment of elation and excitement like that.

“For me there’s no better place than in front of the Stretford End like that. It ends up meaning more. People leave here with more than just, ‘United won today’ – it’s layers on top of that, the emotion and the feeling and it’s why we all love it so much.”

The ‘Manchester United Way’ is back as ‘Fergie Time’ win over Fulham restores feelgood factor

When Manchester United scored their injury-time winner, the cameras panned to Sir Alex Ferguson, because that is what happens at such moments. It was Fergie Time.

It was also a Carrick scoreline, though. A second successive 3-2 win, a third in the six matches Michael Carrick has overseen – including three in 2021 – seemed confirmation that, calm a character as the head coach is, he can preside over some dramatic, terrific matches.

Tottenham's injury concerns

Thomas Frank will hope to welcome back Micky van de Ven, who missed the City draw with a minor problem, and Dominic Solanke is expected to be fit despite being withdrawn early in that game with a rolled ankle.

Mohammed Kudus, Ben Davies, James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur are among those out with longer-term injuries, while Saturday will come too soon for the returns of Richarlison and Pedro Porro.

Predicted Tottenham XI: Vicario; Gray, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Gallagher, Palhinha, Sarr; Kolo Muani, Simons, Solanke.

Man Utd v Tottenham

10:00 , Mike Jones

Manchester United play host to Tottenham in today’s lunchtime kick-off with Michael Carrick hoping to maintain his perfect start to life as interim boss at Old Trafford.

Carrick is coming off three wins on the bounce since being appointed last month - a feat Ruben Amorim only achieved once during his 14-month reign - though was fortunate to escape dropped points against Fulham last Sunday, requiring the stoppage-time heroics of Benjamin Sesko to claim victory.

He’ll nevertheless strive to make it four in a row against the team he joined United from as a player in 2006, with the prospect of a relegation fight more than non-existent for Tottenham.

Thomas Frank perhaps survived another close shave with the sack last weekend, with Spurs salvaging a 2-2 draw against Manchester City despite putting in a lifeless first-half performance, but the Dane will need to keep the good results coming if he is to survive long in the Spurs hot seat.

Good morning!

08:48 , Mike Jones

Welcome to The Independent’s coverage of today’s Premier League action as Manchester United host Tottenham at Old Trafford.

It’s another big outing for Michael Carrick’s men who have, so far, been perfect under the new boss with three wins from three games.

Carrick is hoping to lead the team into a top four finish and sinking Spurs would be another huge result for the interim.

Likewise, a victory at Old Trafford would ease a mountain of pressure on Tottenham boss Thomas Frank whose struggling side sit 14th in the table and are dealing with a mounting list of injury concerns.

We’ll have all the updates and team news throughout the day so stick around as we build up to kick off at 12.30pm.
