Man Utd transfer round-up: United suffer McGinn setback and snub striker move

Manchester United left it late to nudge past West Ham on Saturday afternoon after Marcus Rashford's last gasp-winner catapulted Ralf Rangnick's above the Hammers and into the final Champions League spot.

Rashford's late strike was enough to seal a 1-0 win for United at Old Trafford, but there's still a long way to go in the race to clinch a European place.

It remains to be seen if Rangnick will be allowed to dip into the transfer market to help bolster United's bid to secure a top-four finish.

But that hasn't stopped a host of names being linked with a move to Manchester.

With just over a week left before the transfer window slams shut, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest transfer rumours from Old Trafford...

United suffer McGinn setback

Manchester United suffered a big setback in their reported pursuit of John McGinn after Steven Gerrard insisted that he had no appetite to sell the Scottish midfielder.

McGinn is one of Villa's top players and has been a standout performer during the current Premier League campaign where he's notched three goals and two assists already this season.

His form has attracted United's attention ahead of their mission to sign a top midfielder in the summer, but Gerrard has quashed any chance of McGinn leaving Aston Villa in the near future.

"We are certainly not a club that is looking to sell. Our intention is to keep John McGinn here," Gerrard said prior to Villa's 1-0 win over Everton on Saturday.

"We don't want to be a selling club unless there is a situation, as with [Jack] Grealish, which works itself out if you like.

"We want [McGinn] to remain a Villa player and we can't be any clearer on that. We love the player, we love the human being and we want to help him.

"We certainly see it as a compliment when our best players, or any of our players, are linked with big moves away. I think it shows they are playing at a consistent level."

United snub City-bound striker

According to reports, United snubbed the chance to strike a deal for goalscoring sensation Julian Alvarez, with the River Plate star now set to join rivals Manchester City.

The Times claim that United were offered the chance to sign the 21-year-old, who has won five international caps for Argentina, but declined the chance to do.

Despite being rejected by United, Alvarez looks nailed on to arrive in the Premier League given City's interest.

Alvarez reportedly has a £15million release clause, with the deal expected to rise to £15.5m including add-ons.

The youngster bagged 20 goals in 35 games last term to top the scoring charts in Argentina.

Rice drops Old Trafford tease

Declan Rice admitted that Old Trafford is one of his "favourite places to play" (Sky Sports)

Manchester United's long-term transfer target Declan Rice appeared to leave the door to a future switch to Old Trafford open after the Hammers' narrow 1-0 defeat on Saturday.

The West Ham midfielder was one of the best players on the pitch - and admitted that Old Trafford was one of his "favourite places to play".

"I was loving it," Rice said, despite seeing his team fall just short of what would have been an impressive away point.

"Every time I come to Old Trafford, I've always said it's one of my favourite places to play. It's an amazing stadium."

Rice is thought to be one of Rangnick's top targets as he searches for a new midfielder, although West Ham are reluctant to sell their prized asset and may demand a fee in excess of £100m.
