Man Utd told they picked wrong midfield transfer and missed out on "absolute bargain"

Manchester United should have gone all out to sign now- Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma from Brighton & Hove Albion.

That's according to former Arsenal star Paul Merson, who has "no idea why" the Red Devils did not go in for the Mali international as Erik Ten Hag tries to bolster their midfield options. A similar type of player in Frenkie de Jong has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer but it seems as though a deal for the 25-year-old is proving to be difficult to strike.

Youri Tielemans and Christian Eriksen have also been tipped to join the club with United lacking midfield options at this moment in time after Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba all left at the end of their contracts. It is clear the Red Devils need to sign at least one maybe two in that position, and Merson believes Bissouma should have been the man they went for.

He has described Bissouma as a "bargain" and admits it could be one of the signings of the summer window as Spurs try and push on after pipping Arsenal to a top-four finish. "This is an unbelievable coup for Spurs as Yves Bissouma could have played for any of the other top-six sides in the Premier League," Merson told Sportskeeda.

"He’s better than Scott McTominay and Fred, I have no idea why Manchester United didn’t go in for him! He runs the show, affects football matches right from the get-go and is an all-round midfielder with quite a bit of Premier League experience under his belt.

"No disrespect to Spurs, but why didn’t some of the other teams look at him and consider making a move for him. I look at Liverpool ’s midfield and feel he could play for them, especially if someone like Fabinho were to get injured.

"£25 million in this day and age – it’s nothing. Spurs have nabbed an absolute bargain with Bissouma and he, in my opinion, has been the signing of the summer in the Premier League so far."

Bissouma initially made the switch to Brighton from Lille for a club record fee in 2018 and quickly became a fans' favourite on the south coast for his quality on the ball and aggression off it. He went on to play 124 times for the Seagulls, scoring six times including one against Spurs in the FA Cup fourth round last season - a goal that could have persuaded Conte to buy the player.
