Man Utd target 'a candidate' for Nottingham Forest role amid Steve Cooper uncertainty

Nottingham Forest are reportedly considering making a move for New York Red Bulls manager Gerhard Struber should they part ways with Steve Cooper.

The Forest boss is under increasing pressure at the City Ground following the fifth straight loss in the Premier League on Monday night. The Reds fell to a 4-0 defeat against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, a result which leaves them at the bottom of the table after eight games.

It was reported that Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was considering Cooper’s future, but it now seems that the Welshman will take charge of the Premier League game against Aston Villa. Forest instead are eyeing a shake-up in the backroom staff with Filippo Giraldi joining as Sporting Director and Dane Murphy reportedly set to be replaced by former Newcastle United man Lee Charnley.

However, according to the Sun , Forest are still eyeing up potential replacements for Cooper should the two part ways. The report says that Struber is being ‘considered’ by the Reds with the former Red Bull Salzburg and Barnsley manager ‘in the frame’ should Cooper depart.

Interestingly, Struber would have worked with Murphy during the duo’s time at Oakwell as the Austrian helped to keep Barnsley in the Championship in the 2019/20 season.

The manager is said to have turned down the chance of moving back to England back in December, having been offered the chance to become Ralf Rangnick’s assistant manager at Manchester United. The manager is however said to be keen to return to England in the ‘near future.’
