Man Utd takeover bids 'not high enough' as Glazers demand more to sell club

The takeover bids for Manchester United are not high enough for the Glazers to sell, according to reports.

Last Friday the club set a deadline for potential buyers to express their interest with Britain's richest man Jim Ratcliffe among them. Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, the chairman of Qatari bank QIB, announced his intention to bid for 100 per cent of the club.

The sale of United is likely to break the record for a sport clubs - with the Denver Broncos currently holding that record after the NFL franchise sold for $4.6bn. The Financial Times understands that the current offers are below their expectations however, which could scupper any deal.

The ownership have been heavily criticised with fans mounting protests against the largely absent Americans. However, according to The Athletic, Avram Glazer still feels "emotionally invested" in the club.

That is at odds with some other family members however. Joel Glazer is still keen to hold onto the club, but Kevin, Bryan, Edward and Darcie Glazer are all wanting to sell the family's 69 per cent shareholding - which would lead to a massive profit.

An American hedge fund could yet prove the best bet for the Glazers. The Elliott Investment Management are considering entering the bidding process. They are open to the idea of the current owners remaining in charge in Manchester, which could prove to their liking.

A recent report also claimed that are ready to pour £2bn into Old Trafford, which has been neglected and is in desperate need of a redevelopment. Their Carrington training base, whilst it has had some investment, is also seen as second rate when compared to their major rivals.

United's owners will be in attendance at Wembley on Sunday with the club looking to claim the Carabao Cup. The Red Devils have failed to win any silverware since 2017, which has seen anger mount against the Glazers. For almost a decade Sir Alex Ferguson's success appeared to cover up any concerns with the owners.

Now, in the years since his retirement, United have been heavily criticised as they go through a host of major managers, spend billions on players with little success and allow individuals with minimal experience to make decisions regarding the day-to-day running of the club.
