Man Utd take icon's advice on Harry Kane transfer pursuit as 'initial move' launched

Manchester United appear to have taken the advice of icon Dwight Yorke to launch a move for Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

Kane appears increasingly likely to depart Spurs in the summer as he prepares to enter the final year of his contract. United are the frontrunners to buy the England captain, with boss Erik ten Hag keen to boost his options in the forward line.

The Red Devils have long eyed a move for Kane, who became Tottenham and England's record scorer earlier this season. Kane is not the only man on their shopping list, with Napoli star Victor Osimhen also being linked with a move to Old Trafford.

But earlier this month, Yorke cautioned his former club to prioritise Kane over Serie A's top scorer. He likened Kane to Robin van Persie, who joined United from Arsenal and was then key in winning the Premier League in his debut season..

"Victor Osimhen does look like the real deal and Harry Kane is 29-years-old - soon to be 30 - but Robin van Persie was 29-years-old when he joined Manchester United from Arsenal and look what happened," he said earlier this month.

"If Kane was over 30, then I'd probably say they should prioritise Osimhen, but at 29 Kane still has a couple of good years and he'll want that elusive Premier League title or major trophy.

"The problem is that it's never a two-year contract, it's always at least four years. In terms of these next two years, I'd sign Kane, but after that is when it becomes a problem."

It appears United have taken Yorke's advice on board, with the Daily Telegraph reporting they have started to make attempts to sign the Spurs star. The Red Devils are said to be planning submitting a bid for Kane and due diligence on his price tag has begun.

There is an increasing expectation that he will not sign a new contract with Tottenham this summer. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is a notoriously tough negotiator, with United keen to wrap up a deal quickly.

That is said to be their motive for starting work now on their move for Kane, in case they do need to switch to an alternative target. United may face competition from Bayern Munich, but the England skipper is thought to be prioritising a move to a fellow Premier League side.

The price tag Tottenham will slap on Kane will likely be at least £100million, though with his contract running down, Levy may be willing to listen to bids around the £80m mark.

Kane was part of the team which was smashed by Newcastle in humiliating fashion on Sunday. And with no new permanent manager yet lined up, it appears his future lies away from Tottenham.
