Man Utd slammed over Paul Pogba treatment as £89m misfit set to leave for free

Tony Cascarino has claimed that Manchester United only have themselves to blame for failing to get the best out of Paul Pogba as the French midfielder nudges closer to a summer exit.

The 29-year-old is due to be a free agent in the summer and has rebuffed a number of contract offers from the club throughout the season. And after picking up a calf injury during United's embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Liverpool in midweek, it's more than likely that Pogba has already played his final game for the club.

United interim boss Ralf Rangnick revealed that the issue Pogba picked up is set to keep him out for a minimum of four weeks - meaning his underwhelming second spell in Manchester is as good as over.

But Cascarino has hit out at United over the midfielder, suggesting that the inferior players Pogba has lined up alongside over the past few years at Old Trafford has limited his ability to make a positive impact in the Premier League - and that United are to blame for failing to utilise Pogba's technical talent properly.

The former Chelsea star - who has also backed Pogba to shine away from Manchester - told The Times : "That Paul Pogba may have played his final game for Manchester United is a sad indictment on the club.

"Fans and pundits alike have criticised the France midfielder for much of his time at Old Trafford, but from my point of view that was because I was envious of Pogba. Rarely do you see a player of his height who is quick, dominant in the air but can also hold his own technically, and so he will be a big loss to the Premier League.

"Perhaps we expected too much of Pogba given the standard of players he had alongside him at United. At Juventus he was part of a world-class midfield which featured the likes of Andrea Pirlo, Claudio Marchisio, Sami Khedira and Arturo Vidal. For all the expensive signings United have made in recent years, they have never got close to a midfield of that quality."

Although Pogba has been criticised for the majority of his second spell at Old Trafford, the midfielder has become increasingly unpopular this term amid United's struggles. The ex-Juventus ace has failed to impress on numerous occasions when fit and has also repeatedly refused to commit his long-term future to the club throughout the campaign.

United now face losing Pogba - who signed for his boyhood club in a £89million deal back in the summer of 2016 - for nothing for a second time. The United academy graduate originally quit the club to join Juventus after running his contract down earlier in his career.
