Manchester United were demolished 7-0 by fierce rivals Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils had been in a rich vein of form, defeating Barcelona in the UEFA Europa League and winning the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United whilst also picking up wins in the Premier League. According to the Daily Mail, that had led to United players speaking in their WhatsApp group about the prospect of catching Premier League leaders Arsenal and second-placed Manchester City, who have been locked in a tense title battle all season.
However, the recent mauling at Anfield will likely have reigned their confidence in significantly and they now sit 14 points behind the Gunners and nine behind City after the top two both secured all three points over the weekend. Pep Guardiola's side defeated Newcastle United 2-0 in an impressive showing at the Etihad Stadium but Arsenal's path to victory was a lot more complicated.

The north London outfit found themselves 1-0 down to Bournemouth within the first 10 seconds though Phillip Billing before the Cherries doubled their advantage in the second-half thanks to a Marcos Senesi header. But the Gunners rallied as goals from Thomas Partey and Ben White set up a dramatic final 20 minutes.
Eventually, Hale End academy graduate Reiss Nelson netted a 97th-minute winner to send the stadium into a state of ecstasy, restoring their five-point gap over City in the process. "We are going to keep going, game by game, day by day," Nelson said after the game when asked about the ongoing title race.
"We will watch the game back, see all the things we did wrong and put that right."
