Man Utd news: Qatar takeover bid worry as Neville proved right over "mess"

Manchester United's dip in form is threatening their top four spot amid continued talk of their possible takeover.

The Red Devils were undone at Newcastle last time out and a recent point for Tottenham has seen them slip down to fifth. They have games in hand on their rivals, but their spot in the Champions League next season is by no means guaranteed.

Off the pitch the Glazers are continuing to explore their options with several men looking to take the Premier League club off their hands. Their asking price could prove to be an issue, as could their reluctance to drop it, despite parties from around the globe keen.

Here's the latest new from Old Trafford.

Concerns over Qatari takeover bid

Officials from the UK government have raised concerns about Sheikh Jassim as he looks to buy the Red Devils from the Glazers.

The Qatari is one of the frontrunners to buy the Premier League club, with the Qatari banker going up against British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Finnish businessman Zilliacus. The takeover process is continuing to drag on, with the Raine Group expected to provide an update in the coming days.

Sheikh Jassim is looking to make a 100 per cent buyout of the United shareholders, as well as clearing the club's debt. But he is facing a major issue now that concerns have been voiced about his previous business record.

Neville's Conte view proved right

Gary Neville feels he's been proved right with his long-standing that view that United shouldn't have appointed Antonio Conte when they were looking for a Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replacement.

Despite the Italian's interest in the job, Tottenham snapped up his services in November 2021. The board chose to go with Ralf Rangnick once they'd axed the Norwegian, despite some fans and pundits urging them to make a move for Conte, who's now parted ways with Spurs after 16 turbulent months in the capital.

Neville continued to push back on the idea of hiring the Italian, insisting time and again that Conte wasn't the right fit for his former side, which often brought a wave of backlash. Now though, Spurs and the ex- Chelsea boss have gone their separate ways after a foul mouthed rant that saw him target the players and the club's board - and Neville has blasted it all a "mess".

Shaw pens new deal

Luke Shaw has signed a new contract that will keep him in Manchester until 2027.

The England defender was out of contract at the end of next season, but has made 249 appearances for United and emerged as a key player under Erik ten Hag. Shaw joined United in 2014 from Southampton in a £27million deal, but lost his place at the start of the season, although he's since reclaimed his status as a regular.

After penning the new deal Shaw said: "Nine years ago, I signed for this amazing club, and I'm thrilled to be extending my stay. I've grown immensely since coming to Manchester all those years ago, both as a person and as a player. I know what is needed to succeed at a club like this."
