Man Utd news: Erik ten Hag discovers setback as Bruno Fernandes comes in for harsh criticism

Manchester United will be counting down the days until their return to Premier League action as they look to continue their impressive turnaround to the season, with a number of big stars set to return from international duty.

However, one of those has been hit with huge criticism, as Bruno Fernandes finds himself being labelled as “very selfish” and that fans wished he had joined Tottenham. Elsewhere, Erik ten Hag has been dealt with an injury setback during the international break, while club chief John Murtough has outlined January spending plans.

Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest stories coming out of Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes slammed as “very selfish”

Former Man United defender Paul Parker has issued a withering verbal barrage against Fernandes after the playmaker's "embarrassing" remarks about his former managers.

In an interview released earlier this week, Fernandes spoke of how United had been hindered by hiring bosses with contrasting styles, namely Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick. Solskjaer was sacked last November following a dismal start to the season and Rangnick struggled to steady the ship, leading United to their lowest-ever Premier League points tally.

While it has undoubtedly been a turbulent year at Old Trafford, former England international Parker accused "very selfish" Fernandes of attempting to deflect the blame away from himself and his teammates with his comments.

Erik ten Hag receives injury setback

Man United have another injury concern to contend with after Martin Dubravka pulled out of international duty with Slovakia.

The goalkeeper, 33, joined the Red Devils from Newcastle this summer in a £2million loan deal which will become permanent for £6m depending on how many appearances he makes this season. He is yet to make his debut for Ten Hag's side and was surprisingly left out of the squad which defeated Sheriff Tiraspol 2-0 in the Europa League last week.

It is not known whether Dubravka's omission was due to injury, and he was able to join up with his international teammates earlier this week. However, his time with the Slovakia set-up has been short-lived as he suffered an injury in training and will return to United's Carrington base to undergo further assessment.

John Murtough outlines January spending plans

Man United football director Murtough has outlined the club's spending plans for January - and made it clear there will be a lot less activity in the winter transfer window.

Speaking on a call to discuss Man United's financial performance this Thursday, Murtough explained that while Ten Hag will continue to receive support from the club, he will have less cash to splash in January - a statement that hasn't gone down too well with fans.

He said: "Overall, we are ahead of schedule in our recruitment plans as envisaged at the start of the summer, and we do not anticipate the same level of activity in future windows. As always, our planning focuses on the summer window.
