Man Utd news: Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer option as Harry Maguire made to wait

Manchester United will be welcoming back the majority of their squad to the training ground this week as those who were on international duty over the past fortnight return to the north west.

One of those will be superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who has entered a new battle after the Portuguese press turned on him following Portugal’s latest fixtures, although it has also been revealed that a fresh transfer option has emerged for the 37-year-old. Elsewhere, Harry Maguire waited two hours to speak with Gareth Southgate after England’s draw with Germany on Monday.

Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest stories coming out of Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo's transfer option

Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal have claimed Man United forward Ronaldo was interested in joining them in the summer.

Chelsea, Napoli and Atletico Madrid were all linked with Ronaldo, but it's believed no Champions League club came close to signing him. The only concrete offer the veteran forward received was a £211million two-year deal from an unnamed Saudi Arabian club.

As Ronaldo's desire to leave United was to play Champions League football, he was never expected to accept this offer. Yet it's claimed the Portugal international did consider a contract from Al-Hilal. Whether this was the huge £211m offer remains unconfirmed.

Portuguese press turn on Ronaldo after Portugal showing

The Portuguese press called for Ronaldo to be dropped from the starting XI for Tuesday night's game against Spain.

Ronaldo, 37, is Portugal's skipper but has struggled for form this season. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has played a supporting role at Man United this season - starting just once in the Premier League - and has scored only one goal in all competitions.

Ronaldo did provide an assist in Portugal's 4-0 win against Czech Republic in Prague on Saturday night but failed to find the net, leading to some sections of the Portuguese press calling for Ronaldo to be dropped. A Bola, one of Portugal's biggest sport publications, ran the headline "menos Ronaldo, mais Portugal" on Monday, which translates into "less Ronaldo, more Portugal".

Perhaps they had a point, given Ronaldo was largely anonymous as the Seleccao fell to a 1-0 defeat against Spain on Tuesday night.

Harry Maguire’s two-hour Wembley wait for Gareth Southgate

Maguire stayed behind at Wembley for almost two hours after England's draw with Germany on Monday night to hold a private chat with boss Southgate.

The Man United defender was at fault for two of the three goals that the home side conceded in the game, including for Germany's opening penalty, where Maguire initially lost possession before chopping down Jamal Musiala with a clumsy challenge.

The Nations League encounter was England's final match before their World Cup squad is announced later this year. Maguire remained behind at Wembley long after the final whistle and after his teammates had departed, waiting for Southgate to conclude his post-match media duties before the pair talked.
