Man Utd news: Cristiano Ronaldo announces return as Frenkie de Jong alternative unlikely

Manchester United are aiming to bounce back from the worst season of their Premier League history in style under the guidance of new boss Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman's Old Trafford revolution has taken longer than some may have anticipated to take shape, but with three new arrivals through the door, hopes are high among the Red Devils faithful. Tyrell Malacia was the first signing of the Ten Hag era, before Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez followed suit.

Pre-season has increased the optimism, with Ten Hag yet to taste defeat since taking charge of the club after a run of three wins and one draw - the slight slip up coming against fellow Premier League side Aston Villa out in Australia.

Mirror Football has collated the latest Red Devils headlines to provide an overview of all things United.

Cristiano Ronaldo's emphatic announcement

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has been the subject of intense speculation this transfer window after making his desire to leave the club clear to the those at the top of the United hierarchy.

In the aftermath of his transfer request being lodged, Ronaldo did not join the club for pre-season and cited 'family reasons' as the explanation behind his absence.

However, he has at long last come back and declared he is ready for action, with United taking on La Liga side Rayo Vallecano for their final pre-season clash before the new Premier League season starts.

Writing in the comments section of an Instagram fan page, Ronaldo added: "Sunday the King plays."

Plan for De Jong alternative hits a snag

HAVE YOUR SAY! Which midfielder will Manchester United sign this summer? Comment below!

United are rumoured to have turned their attentions to Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as an alternative to Frenkie de Jong as the ex-Ajax midfielder looks set to stay at Barcelona.

Unfortunately for United, they could miss out on the Serbian international as well, with their first offer of £42m on course to be swiftly rejected by the Serie A outfit, who are holding out for around £20m more.

This is not the first time United have declared their interest in Lazio fan-favourite Milinkovic-Savic; he was also admired by Jose Mourinho when the self-proclaimed 'Special One' was at the helm at Old Trafford.

United urged to give Ronaldo the boot

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has insisted United should part ways with Ronaldo this summer if they want to close the gap between themselves and their Premier League rivals.

“Ronaldo has told you what he wants, so why hang onto him? Man United have got to draw the line and get rid of him if they really want to catch Man City and Liverpool,” Merson wrote in his Daily Star column.

“If they can make him out to be the bad one, I think they've had a result. In all honestly, I don't think he does them any favours anyway. People say he got 24 goals last season but Man United never looked like winning anything.”
