Man Utd injury latest and expected return dates including Scott McTominay and Edinson Cavani

Manchester United recorded their first Premier League victory of 2022 when they defeated Brentford 3-1 on Wednesday night in west London.

And the Red Devils did so by welcoming back a few familiar faces to the side, as Cristiano Ronaldo returned to action along with Marcus Rashford.

But Ralf Rangnick was also without six of his players, while Scott McTominay suffered an injury during the game to add to the list of worries.

However, there is hope that not all six of those will be missing once again this weekend, as United welcome West Ham to Old Trafford on Saturday in a huge clash in the race for the top four.

Here is all you need to know about the current state of play at Old Trafford and the expected return dates for those missing in midweek.

Where do you think Man Utd will finish this season? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Scott McTominay

Midfielder Scott McTominay started in Wednesday’s victory over Brentford and lasted the majority of the game before being replaced after 84 minutes.

The Scotland international picked up a lower back injury during the game and attempted to play on, before the injury eventually forced him off.

However, it is not thought to be too serious and it is expected that McTominay will be in good enough condition to feature against West Ham on Saturday

Rangnick is confident the Scotland international will be available for Saturday’s visit of one of United’s challengers for a top-four finish.

“He got a knock on the back and couldn’t breathe properly,” said Rangnick. “I spoke to him in the locker room and he should be OK for Saturday.”

Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw was set to come back into the fold for the Red Devils after he served his one match suspension against Aston Villa at the weekend.

However, the left back was left out of Wednesday night’s squad after experiencing some hamstring problems in Tuesday’s training session, and it is unclear as to when he may return.

Ahead of the Brentford game, Rangnick said: “Luke, unfortunately, also had to pull out after yesterday's training. He had some hamstring problems after yesterday’s training session.”

Edinson Cavani

Edinson Cavani was another who was left out of the trip to Brentford on Wednesday after also picking up an injury during training this week.

The Uruguayan had experienced some muscular problems earlier in the week and it remains to be seen as to whether or not he will feature against West Ham on Saturday.

Prior to the Brentford victory, Rangnick said: “Edinson had to drop out after training yesterday. He had a muscular problem, so for me, it was logical.”

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been missing from the Man Utd squad since the FA Cup victory over Aston Villa on January 10.

The defender has fallen ill and Rangnick revealed it is unlikely he will be involved against West Ham on Saturday, but expects him back in the side following the international break.

Speaking on Tuesday, Rangnick said: "He will not be available for the game tomorrow and also probably not available for the West Ham game. Hopefully, after the international break, he will be back for training."

Paul Pogba

French midfielder Paul Pogba is getting nearer to a return for the Red Devils as he continues to step up his recovery from a groin injury he sustained during the November international break.

Pogba has been back in training in recent times and he is expected to become available again within the next couple of weeks.

On Tuesday, Rangnick said: "What I saw in training yesterday was very promising, and I'm looking forward to having him available in two weeks time after the international break."

Jadon Sancho

There is no injury concern with Jadon Sancho, despite the winger being absent from the squad in midweek.

Rangnick revealed that Sancho had missed the game due to personal reasons, as he attended a funeral.

It can be expected that the 21-year-old will once again be a part of the squad ahead of this weekend.

Eric Bailly

Defender Eric Bailly continues to miss out as he competes with Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The centre-back has featured in all three of Ivory Coast’s Group E games so far, as the Elephants advanced to the knockout stages.

This means that Bailly’s return will be dependent on how far his nation progresses for the rest of the tournament.
