Manchester United fans appear to be in agreement that Wout Weghorst's goal against Real Betis means all is forgiven after he sparked controversy during Sunday's 7-0 hammering at the hands of Liverpool.
The Netherlands international came in for serious criticism this week after footage emerged of Weghorst seemingly affectionately touching the 'This is Anfield' sign in the tunnel before United were demolished by their fierce rivals. The backlash was so severe that the Dutch striker felt compelled to release a statement on social media addressing the controversy.
He wrote: "Normally I never react on media topics, but for this one, it's worth it because you amazing United fans are important to me. So I just want to clarify the video that is doing the rounds.
"From the National team, I know that Virgil always touches that sign and I went to stop him touching it to try and wind him up before the game.
"As a child I always supported FC Twente, and as a proud player now for Manchester United, my dedication to this incredible club can never be questioned.
"Sunday was a terrible day for all of us. We are putting everything into making it right in the next weeks. We will bounce back together and achieve our aims this season!"

However, attitudes towards Weghorst have seemingly shifted after he responded quickest when Scott McTominay's strike was parried by Claudio Bravo to convert United's fourth and final goal against Real Betis during the 4-1 Europa League win.
Plenty of United fans were quick to point out just how emotional Weghorst was as he wheeled away in celebration after notching what is just the second strike of his Red Devils career so far.
One Twitter user wrote: "Buzzing for Weghorst! Could see how much it meant to him!", while another added: "Weghorst celebrated his first goal at Old Trafford like he won a million dollar lottery. It is so wholesome."
Another fan tweeted: "WEGHORST IN FRONT OF THE STRETFORD END, LOOK WHAT IT MEANS... YOU LOVE TO SEE IT."
Weghorst's teammate Marcus Rashford commented on the goal after the game and explained how delighted the rest of the squad is for the Burnley loanee as he told BT Sport: "As a forward he gets joy from scoring goals.
"As good as he works hard and does other stuff he wants to score goals so everyone is pleased for him."
