Man Utd failed in moves for three goalkeepers before turning back to Martin Dubravka

Manchester United are reportedly hoping to thrash out a loan deal with Newcastle for Martin Dubravka so they can finally end their search for a new goalkeeper.

Erik ten Hag is intent on snapping up an experienced shot-stopper who is comfortable with the ball at his feet to provide competition for David de Gea, who has struggled to get to grips with the Dutchman's philosophy in the early weeks of the new Premier League campaign.

However, the former Ajax chief has struggled to source a viable candidate to come in and compete with the Spaniard for the No.1 shirt. And there are no guarantees that Dubravka will solve the club's goalkeeping conundrum given that he snubbed a move to Old Trafford in the final hours of the January transfer window.

Sky Sports revealed on Wednesday that Manchester United have rekindled their interest in the Slovakian shot-stopper, who has lost his first-team spot at St. James' Park following the arrival of England star Nick Pope.

But the Newcastle man wasn't United's first port of call once it was decided that the club were in the market for a new goalkeeper.

Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp had emerged as Ten Hag's primary target, but in a recent social media post, the 32-year-old has revealed that he snubbed interest from United - who he claims had submitted a "written offer" for his services.

Trapp wrote on Instagram : "Dear fans, much has been reported about Manchester United's interest in the past few days. It is true that there is a written offer. Manchester United is a global club and I hope everyone can understand that I am considering and thinking about an offer like this.

"Yesterday, however, I informed those responsible at both clubs that I had decided on Eintracht. I experienced unforgettable things here with Frankfurt and we made history together. The start of the season was bumpy, but I have absolute confidence in us."

United have also seemingly been thwarted in their attempts to prise Yann Sommer away from Borussia Monchengladbach. The 33-year-old Switzerland ace supposedly did not want to move so close to the World Cup, which takes place in Qatar later this year.

Elsewhere, reported interest in Benfica shot-stopper Odysseas Vlachodimos was extinguished after the Portuguese giants made it clear that they had no appetite to discuss a deal for the 28-year-old Greek international.

United will now be hoping that they encounter no snags in a deal for Dubravka, who could be more receptive to a move to Old Trafford than he was during Ralf Rangnick's interim reign after being dislodged at Newcastle by Pope.

As well as signing a new goalkeeper to compete with De Gea, Ten Hag is hoping to tie up a big-money deal for Ajax forward Antony before the September 1 deadline while a new right-back is also on his wish-list.
