Man Utd booed off after creating unwanted record in Brighton defeat

  • Manchester United fell to a 3-2 defeat against Brighton in the Carabao Cup , squandering a two-goal lead at Old Trafford as loud boos reverberated around the ground and pressure intensified on boss Michael Carrick .
  • The hosts enjoyed a dream start to Wednesday’s tie when academy product Shea Lacey kissed the badge after marking his first start with a goal — a day after it emerged that 15-year-old talent JJ Gabriel had requested to leave. Mason Mount then added a second in the 10th minute.
  • Brighton were invited on and deservedly pulled one back through Charalampos Kostoulas just before half-time. Carrick’s side had no answer to the Seagulls’ second-half surge, with Pascal Gross coolly levelling before substitute Maxim De Cuyper struck to spark the boos.
  • Fan fury was even louder at the final whistle as United found a new way to make an embarrassing Carabao Cup exit after last year’s Grimsby humiliation.
  • This was the first time since 1976 that the Red Devils had lost at Old Trafford after going two goals up, leaving Carrick facing difficult questions having wasted such a wonderful early advantage.
