Man United v Brentford LIVE: Carragher backs Carrick for permanent job after ‘run of a title winner’

Manchester United withstood a nervy finish to overcome Brentford in a crucial Premier League clash in the battle for European places.

Casemiro scored his third goal in his past three matches at Old Trafford with a fine header in the 11th minute, after an electric start from the home side.

There were chances aplenty for both sides in an intense first half, and it was United who were firmly on top going into the break after a late second from Benjamin Sesko, ably assisted by Bruno Fernandes. The captain’s 19th top-flight assist of the season put him one behind the record shared by Kevin de Bruyne and Thierry Henry.

It was a very different story in the second half as Michael Carrick switched to a Ruben Amorim-esque formation to shut down Brentford - but the pragmatic approach worked well, save a stunning Mathias Jensen strike in the 88th minute, which set up a grandstand finish.

But United clung on to seal all three points and remain third in the table, 11 clear of Brighton in sixth level and increasingly well placed to earn a berth in next season’s Champions League. Brentford meanwhile remain ninth in a congested middle of the pack.

Premier League has clinched fifth Champions League spot - but could get another

02:00 , Flo Clifford

The Premier League could boast six clubs in the Champions League for a second season running if all the right pieces fall into place.

The extra fifth place was sealed after Arsenal reached the Champions League quarter-finals. It is the second consecutive year that the Premier League has earned an additional spot, with the English top flight at the top of the European Performance Standings (EPS).

Last term saw an unprecedented six English clubs qualify for the Champions League; five by their league position, and with Tottenham earning their place in the league phase after winning the Europa League.

The same could happen again this term, with the Premier League appearing as one of the more prominent beneficiaries to the competition’s expansion to 36 teams that came into effect at the beginning of 2024/25.

Premier League has clinched fifth Champions League spot - but could get another

Harry Maguire tells Sky Sports:

01:30 , Flo Clifford

“It was tough, I think we started the game really well and after 25 minutes they got into the grip of the game, and then we changed the shape a little bit in the second half and it felt a lot more solid. We covered the pitch a lot more, a lot less crosses were coming into the box.

“Disappointing to concede [Jensen’s] goal from the edge of the box. We've got to get out a little bit quicker than that to block the shot, block the ball. But it felt comfortable apart from the set-play chance off the bar.

“But the shape [change] helped us in the second half not to concede as many chances, but overall I felt we should have done a little bit more with the ball.”

Brentford miss out on chance to make history

01:00 , Flo Clifford

Before tonight Brentford had won their last two league matches against Man United and were going for the league double over Carrick’s side.

It would have been the first time they’d achieved since the 1936-37 season - when United were relegated.

Carrick says back three switch was planned:

00:40 , Flo Clifford

“We were going to make it anyway and then we scored the second goal. There were just certain spaces that we needed to cover better. It was purely a tactical decision. In the position we were in at half time, we wanted to see the game through.

“The way the boys managed it - it's a tough league to get results in. To get the amount of wins we have, we are delighted with that.”

Michael Carrick tells Sky Sports:

00:20 , Flo Clifford

“It was quite an open game. I thought we started fantastically. We should've been at least another goal up, maybe more. Credit to them, they're a good team and have a really good mix of threats.

“We tweaked things second half and for the most part had decent control. I thought the spirit and effort was fantastic. We could've scored more but at this time of the year it's a results business.”

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher says Carrick will be given permanent job

00:00 , Flo Clifford

He says: “He's going to be Manchester United manager next season, no doubt about it. You can't say he doesn't deserve it. They have put a run of results of a title winner although they haven't got European football to contend with. I don't think anyone could have come in and done better results-wise. Performances haven't been great but it's not a great Man Utd team and he's still getting big results.

“The biggest criticism of Ruben Amorin was that he never adapted, Carrick has shown he can adapt.”

Keith Andrews tells Sky Sports:

23:50 , Flo Clifford

“Anyone that watches us will see we are a team with a lot of spirit. We have a nice click around the group. We fight hard but you have to earn results in this division. We have been on a really good journey this year that allows us to come to a ground like this and play in that manner.”

The Brentford boss is asked about going six games without a win and whether there is still confidence as the final run-in for a European place hots up.

He says: “I saw a lot of confidence tonight. I saw personality, a team that is striving and doing everything it can to get results.”

Keith Andrews tells Sky Sports:

23:40 , Flo Clifford

“Pleased with the performance. They started better than we did and we were on the back foot. But after that a top reaction. I thought we were outstanding for large parts of the game but we couldn't take our opportunities.

“I enjoyed watching us play in every aspect after that first 10 minutes. The bravery and courage we showed, to come somewhere like this and play in that manner shows a good step in the right direction. The next step is being clinical and ruthless.”

Harry Maguire tells Sky Sports:

23:30 , Flo Clifford

“I think the formation change has helped us a lot, to be honest. I think the results spoke for itself. So I think we're comfortable that we can play both formations.

“But I think we didn't cover the pitch well enough in the in the last 20 minutes of the first half, and was letting too many balls into the box, and then they were putting a lot of numbers in the box as well.

“I think it was good that the manager recognised that, and we changed the second half, and I felt like it was a lot more comfortable.”

Jamie Carragher backs Michael Carrick for permanent job

23:20 , Flo Clifford

Jamie Carragher has said there is “no doubt” Michael Carrick will be appointed permanent Manchester United manager after overseeing a complete turnaround in the club’s fortunes in interim charge.

Carrick presided over an important Premier League win over Brentford on Monday night, with the 2-1 win taking them to the brink of securing Champions League football next season after a year out of Europe.

Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko scored while Mathias Jensen pulled a consolation goal back to set up a nervy finish, which United rode out to seal all three points.

Carragher said on Sky Sports: “He's going to be Manchester United manager next season, no doubt about it. You can't say he doesn't deserve it. They have put [together] a run of results of a title winner, although they haven't got European football to contend with.

Carragher backs Carrick for permanent Manchester United job after win over Brentford

Harry Maguire on Casemiro:

23:10 , Flo Clifford

“I've played in in a lot of teams where I get one, two players marking me, and all the focus is on myself. I think now all the teams are respecting that Casemiro is a massive threat as well. So they have to take a lot of eyes on him. They have to put a good defender on him, rather than putting two on myself at the moment.

“It frees us both up. Our record when we both play together, when I play, I think Casemiro gets more goals and when he plays I get more opportunities as well. It's good that we have two big targets, two good threats in in the attacking box. And I think it makes a lot harder for the opposition.”

How United can secure Champions League

23:00 , Flo Clifford

United have four games remaining and just need two points to guarantee a Champions League berth next season.

They can be helped out by Brighton or Bournemouth this weekend; if either of those two teams fail to win before United face Liverpool, they will mathematically be unable to match the Red Devils’ 61-point haul over the rest of the season, and will confirm a spot for Carrick’s side at the top table in Europe.

Benjamin Sesko tells Sky Sports:

22:52 , Flo Clifford

Asked about Casemiro, the Slovenian says: “He's a work machine, he never stops. We are pleased that we have him and we are going to use it until the last minute before he leaves. He helps us very much."

On combining with Bruno Fernandes, he says: “We work a lot on the training field and on the pitch as well. It's paying off.”

“We have to push until the last minute [for Champions League football]. It's important to bring the energy we brought today and we believe we can manage it.”

Benjamin Sesko tells Sky Sports:

22:44 , Flo Clifford

“It feels amazing. It was tough because we knew we faced a difficult team but we managed to hold the score until the end and we deserved the victory.

“It's very important the way we start the game. It gives the crowd extra energy and we used it. We scored two goals.”

On scoring another goal, he says: “I'm feeling better from game to game. I am connected more with the team.”

(AP)

Harry Maguire on Michael Carrick's success:

22:37 , Flo Clifford

“The results help. We had two tough fixtures when Carrick came in against Arsenal and Man City but we managed to get six points. From then everyone started to believe and we got confidence.

“We can get a lot better in this formation. We'll get better the longer we work as a unit. The results speak for themselves, since the manager has come in and the formation has changed.

“The games under Ruben Amorim which were 50-50 we'd always end up with a defeat now it's the other way around. We're a lot better in both boxes.”

Harry Maguire tells Sky Sports:

22:29 , Flo Clifford

“I thought I was good at heading and attacking the box until I met Casemiro. He's timing, his aggression, his leap - it's the best I've seen and worked with. He's so clinical. Without his goal we wouldn't have been nowhere near where we are in the table.”

(AP)

How the table looks

22:22 , Flo Clifford

Man United remain sitting pretty in third, nine points off City in second but more importantly three clear of fourth-placed Liverpool and Aston Villa in fifth, while Brighton are 11 points back in sixth. They’d have to royally screw up their four remaining games to miss out on the Champions League now.

Brentford remain ninth, level on points with Fulham and Chelsea.

Past and present greats combine as Manchester United thwart Brentford to all but seal Champions League

22:15 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

So the legacy a serial Champions League winner leaves at Manchester United looks like including Champions League football. For a man who conquered Europe as a United player, meanwhile, it looks like a passport to stay in the dugout and compete with the continent’s finest.

United only need a maximum of two points to secure the top-five finish that, after a year of exile from Europe, will send them back in at the top level. As Michael Carrick has rescued a season in remarkable fashion, it appears ever likelier the 2008 Champions League winner will be in charge then.

Past and present combine as Man Utd thwart Brentford to near-seal Champions League

Gary Neville on Sky Sports:

22:04 , Flo Clifford

"It was pulsating in the first half but pragmatic in the second half.

"But Michael Carrick's job is to get Man Utd in the Champions League, and I think he's just gone and done that tonight.

"It was a safe second half but Carrick did what he had to do. he will be dlighted with the victory and they just deserved it in the end."

FULL-TIME: Man Utd 2-1 Brentford

21:54 , Flo Clifford

A ninth win for Michael Carrick in charge of Man United, and that’s Champions League football more or less secured!

Man Utd 2-1 Brentford

21:53 , Flo Clifford

‘90+5: Now or never for Brentford. Collins remonstrates with the referee after more blatant Casemiro shenanigans, but comes off worse with the yellow.

Man Utd 2-1 Brentford

21:51 , Flo Clifford

‘90+3: The referee penalises Collins for a nudge at the near post as Casemiro simply flings himself at the floor. Poor. Collins isn’t impressed.

Man Utd 2-1 Brentford

21:50 , Flo Clifford

‘90+2: Lewis-Potter knocks down the delivery, but Yoro sends it clear.

Zirkzee gets a yellow for kicking the ball away, the muppet, as Brentford look to take a long throw.

Man Utd 2-1 Brentford

21:49 , Flo Clifford

‘90+1: Casemiro lunges in on Kayode, who has the ball, and protests too much as Brentford win the corner.

SAVE! Man Utd 2-1 Brentford

21:48 , Flo Clifford

‘90: Brentford are pushing now. Ouattara floats a lovely ball to Damsgaard just yards out but Lammens makes a fairly comfortable save from his header.

FIVE minutes added on!

Man Utd 2-1 Brentford

21:46 , Flo Clifford

‘89: Sesko comes off for Zirkzee, who has been waiting to come on for some time.

GOAL! Man Utd 2-1 Brentford

21:45 , Flo Clifford

‘88: Brentford have another corner. Damsgaard whips it in... it bounces around and Jensen, from outside the box, fires a lovely strike off the inside of the far post and into the net!

Brentford are back in the game!

Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:43 , Flo Clifford

‘83: 35 touches in the opposition box for Brentford but nothing to show for it. Mazraoui wins a header at the back post to snuff out another attack.

Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:39 , Flo Clifford

‘82: Into the final 10 minutes. The atmosphere, and the enjoyment levels, have dropped off in this half, but United are very close to getting the job done.

Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:36 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

On comes Mason Mount who scored 100 percent of his Premier League goals in his first two seasons for United against Brentford. Although that was only one in each season.

WIDE! Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:35 , Flo Clifford

‘77: Thiago goes into the book for a foul on Heaven. Casemiro fizzes a shot wide and United are adamant Kelleher took a touch, although the replay looks like he was nowhere near it. There’s a bit of argy-bargy between Thiago and Fernandes, for some reason, and both need to be a bit careful there.

Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:32 , Flo Clifford

‘75: Incidentally, there was a warm reception for Mbeumo from the visiting fans as he went off. Little bad blood there.

Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:31 , Flo Clifford

‘73: Shaw is down on the ground and has picked up something... and he’s come off.

Changes: Nelson replaces Schade, and Yoro and Mount come on for Mbeumo and Shaw.

CHANCE! Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:30 , Flo Clifford

‘71: Casemiro flicks on the resulting corner but it lands to Ouattara, who really, really should fire home! He knocks it down but it’s a dreadful header, it bounces up and off the post and back to him. Now he tries a bicycle kick and Maguire flings his body in the way heroically, taking a boot to the head by the looks of things. Yellow for Ouattara and a United free kick.

Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:28 , Flo Clifford

‘70: Brentford are probing. Maguire loses possession to Thiago, who cuts it back for Ouattara, and he has Heaven to thank for an excellent block on a fierce strike.

Now Damsgaard whips in an inviting cross... nothing doing. But now Mazraoui knocks the ball behind for a Brentford corner...

Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:27 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

There are plenty of choruses for Casemiro tonight, including the Stretford End's "one more year, one more year, Casemiro".

There are reasons why that might not be a great idea but the Brazilian can leave with his held high. He had some difficulties in the middle of his spell in Manchester but his first and fourth years at the club have been excellent.

Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:26 , Flo Clifford

‘69: Casemiro brings down Yarmoliuk with a robust challenge as Brentford try to build something.

Fernandes has taken a little knock but play continues.

Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:22 , Flo Clifford

‘64: Carrick’s tactical reversion to this Amorim-esque formation has, ironically, worked quite well so far. Brentford have been shut out. It’s a far cry from that free-flowing first half.

Now Mbeumo darts across with a chance to put this to bed against his old side, but takes a poor touch and Kelleher comes off his line to collect.

(AP)

OFFSIDE! Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:19 , Flo Clifford

‘61: Brentford send a long ball forward. It bounces around to Ouattara, who is in a good spot in the box but skews his finish well wide... offside too.

Van den Berg gets clattered in the face by the flailing arm of Sesko. Ouch. Sesko offers him a handshake in apology.

CHANCE! Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:15 , Flo Clifford

‘57: Thiago’s blushes are spared by the offside flag, he’s well off, but it’s another missed opportunity! Damsgaard whips in a lovely ball from a short throw-in from deep on the right and Thiago heads it goalward... but it’s off again.

Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:12 , Flo Clifford

‘53: Man United are having a strong start to this half, but the visitors have been a bit turgid. Another corner, another Fernandes delivery, another Maguire chance: Brentford clear though and shouts for handball are swiftly dismissed by VAR.

Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:08 , Flo Clifford

‘50: Maguire gets a header to the resulting corner but Kelleher makes a good save!

Brentford break, but run out of steam.

Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:07 , Flo Clifford

‘49: Shaw has a first shot of this half as United work the ball to the left, but it’s off target.

Mbeumo now comes down the right flank but van den Berg puts it behind.

Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:06 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

It looks like a back five for United now with Mazraoui on as a third centre-back and Dalot playing right wing-back. So the formation is an Amorim-esque 3-4-3.

SECOND HALF: Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

21:03 , Flo Clifford

‘45: Away we go again! Mazraoui has come on for Amad, so United may be going for a back five. No changes for the visitors.

HALF-TIME: Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

20:49 , Flo Clifford

The hosts carry a two-goal cushion into the break! Casemiro set off more chants of “one more year” with Man United’s opener before Sesko doubled the lead shortly before half-time, courtesy of Fernandes’ 19th top-flight assist of the season, one off equalling that record.

It could very easily have been a different story: Jensen fired wide late on and Thiago missed three chances in quick succession. This tie is certainly not over.

(AP)

Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

20:47 , Flo Clifford

‘45+1: Jensen comes close but his curling effort drifts wide! Andrews watches on impassively.

Two minutes added on to this half.

Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

20:46 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

That’s 19 Premier League assists this season for Bruno Fernandes now - only one off the record shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne.

(Getty)

GOAL! Man Utd 2-0 Brentford

20:44 , Flo Clifford

‘43: Brentford have been on top for the last 15 minutes or so but will be massively regretting those three missed chances as Sesko - who’s had a very quiet night so far - comes good.

Amad makes a big tackle in the middle of the park and sets up the counter. Fernandes lays it off for Sesko, who takes a couple of touches, isn’t put off by a sliding challenge, and sidefoots it beyond Kelleher into the back of the net.

DISALLOWED GOAL! Man Utd 1-0 Brentford

20:42 , Flo Clifford

‘42: Van den Berg gets a yellow for pulling back Sesko.

Down the other end Amad gets the ball in the net after it pings off both uprights, but he’s about a mile offside and knows it.

Man Utd 1-0 Brentford

20:40 , Flo Clifford

‘40: United are under the kosh right now. They flail around trying to clear this corner, Jensen sends it nearly under the bar and Lammens punches clear.

SAVE! Man Utd 1-0 Brentford

20:39 , Flo Clifford

‘38: A glorious save by Lammens! Damsgaard whips in a glorious cross over Maguire and Heaven, it looks to thump off Heaven’s arm with Thiago right there, and Lammens leaps to palm it behind for a corner!

CHANCE! Man Utd 1-0 Brentford

20:37 , Flo Clifford

‘36: How have Brentford not scored here?! Thiago has space but dithers, takes a touch and then slips, and tries to poke it past Lammens from on the floor, but it rolls tamely to safety. “It’s a right mess,” says Gary Neville on Sky Sports.

He gets in behind soon after from a lovely long ball forward but is a bit too hesitant, Heaven is onto him, and Lammens dives to save! Two golden changes in about a minute.

Man Utd 1-0 Brentford

20:34 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

‘34: Keane Lewis-Potter has been very lively so far and looks Brentford's best chance of getting back into this. He isn't the first Keane to impress at Old Trafford over the years, of course, though he might be the only one to do it as a raiding left-back.

SAVE! Man Utd 1-0 Brentford

20:32 , Flo Clifford

‘31: Nearly two for United! Fernandes dinks a sweet cross to Amad, but he knocks a header straight into Kelleher’s hands. Wasteful. And he’s offside anyway.

Man Utd 1-0 Brentford

20:30 , Flo Clifford

‘29: It’s crowded in the box waiting for the corner and Thiago nudges Shaw, who goes down, and Kavanagh blows for a foul.

(AP)

Man Utd 1-0 Brentford

20:28 , Flo Clifford

‘28: Lewis-Potter has been an absolute livewire down the left. He’s crowded out but wins Brentford another corner. The Bees have not let their heads drop for a second.

Man Utd 1-0 Brentford

20:24 , Flo Clifford

‘24: The camera pans to Alex Ferguson in the crowd. Reckon he’d be pleased with how his old side are looking so far.

Amad drifts in now but pops an effort well wide.

Man Utd 1-0 Brentford

20:20 , Flo Clifford

‘20: This has been a fizzing start. Brentford have ridden that early wave and have had chances to get back into this. A lot of intensity to these early stages, which Carrick will be pleased by.

Lewis-Potter has space, but curls an effort straight to Lammens.

SAVE! Man Utd 1-0 Brentford

20:18 , Flo Clifford

‘17: Brentford have another fine chance as the ball drops to Kayode, who chips an effort goalward with Lammens sprawled on the turf at full stretch, but the keeper somehow manages to punch clear.

CLOSE! Man Utd 1-0 Brentford

20:17 , Flo Clifford

‘16: Casemiro heads it away but Brentford poach it back; Lewis-Potter lashes it across the face of goal for Thiago but Shaw slides in, Thiago gets a fraction of a touch but it dribbles away. He really should score there!

Man Utd 1-0 Brentford

20:15 , Flo Clifford

‘15: Brentford have a corner. There’s a lot of argy-bargy in the goal-mouth and referee Chris Kavanagh comes over to have a word.

Man Utd 1-0 Brentford

20:15 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

‘14: Two Bruno Fernandes corners aimed for Harry Maguire at the far post. The second brought a goal. The first almost did. United deserve their lead and Casemiro could leave as that rarity, a defensive midfielder in double figures for Premier League goals in a season. That was his ninth.

(Reuters)

GOAL! Man Utd 1-0 Brentford

20:13 , Flo Clifford

‘11: Fernandes corner... Maguire thumps a header from one side of the box to Casemiro at the back post and he fires a superb header past Kelleher’s outstretched fingertips!

Casemiro’s ninth Premier League goal of the season! He kisses the badge in response.

SAVE! Man Utd 0-0 Brentford

20:09 , Flo Clifford

‘8: Shaw gets a clear as day booking for hacking down Schade on the counter-attack.

Mbeumo latches onto a long, high ball forward but is closed down by two of his former teammates at the backline.

It’s all United so far and Maguire is the latest to go close, knocking down a Fernandes ball - but Kelleher windmills backwards to grapple at it and just about saves it from behind the line! The referee checks and decides no goal.

Man Utd 0-0 Brentford

20:06 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

‘5: There was a question who would be on the left in the absence of Cunha. The answer appears to be Amad Diallo, with Bryan Mbeumo instead on the right as he faces his former club.

(PA)

Man Utd 0-0 Brentford

20:05 , Flo Clifford

‘4: That was van den Berg who got back just in the nick of time to get his shin to the ball and send it out, with Kelleher in fact not saving at all but sliding towards Mainoo and putting him off.

The resulting corner is dealt with, as is another.

CLOSE! Man Utd 0-0 Brentford

20:03 , Flo Clifford

‘2: Oh my word, Brentford have got away with one here! Mainoo glides into the box and has his defenders on the ropes. Kelleher comes out to save at point-blank range, but Mainoo threads it away to Amad, in for Cunha - he lets fly a low shot which skims just wide! It looked to take a deflection on its way, but that’s a huge let-off for Brentford.

Man Utd 0-0 Brentford

20:02 , Flo Clifford

‘2: Brentford, sporting a rather fetching light blue kit, get us underway. The Bees won the reverse fixture - can they put a spanner in Utd’s Champions League charge again tonight?

An animated Bruno Fernandes told his pre-match huddle, “We have to win every game,” with an expletive in there for emphasis.
