Man United star backs ‘unbelievable’ Michael Carrick to be given full-time role

Benjamin Sesko has urged Manchester United to appoint Michael Carrick as manager on a permanent basis after he steered them to the brink of next season’s Champions League.

Striker Sesko got what proved the winner in Monday’s 2-1 victory over Brentford to leave United 11 points clear of sixth-place Brighton and with four games to go.

Carrick has taken 29 points from his 13 matches in charge, while six of Sesko’s 10 league goals have come in his reign, and the Slovenian hopes the Englishman will continue to be in charge next season.

“Of course, he's an amazing coach, I’ve said this many times,” the summer signing said. “He's brought different energy. Also the way we're doing in the training, it's unbelievable and of course, I would like to have him here.”

United are set to choose Ruben Amorim’s long-term replacement in the summer but Carrick has enhanced his chances during his time in temporary charge.

Sesko’s goal against Brentford came from a pass from Bruno Fernandes, earning the United captain a 19th Premier League assist of the season – one behind the record held jointly by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

And Sesko is backing the Portuguese to break it. “Look, he's capable of everything,” he added. “The way he's playing, the way he's understanding the game, it’s just outstanding and I'm really pleased that I can be part of the team being with him.”

Casemiro scored United’s opening goal and Sesko is disappointed the Brazilian, who will leave when his contract expires in the summer, will not be at Old Trafford next season.

But he said he would be stupid not to learn from the midfielder while he can.

“He’s a working machine,” he explained. “He’s experienced, what he's putting on the pitch is unbelievable. You need someone like this. And I think you can be stupid if you don't look at him and try to be as him when it comes to the work rate and stuff. Unfortunately, he’s leaving.”
