Man United issue new Cristiano Ronaldo statement as Erik ten Hag wins first game since saga

Manchester United last night bid a final farewell to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo's explosive interview with Piers Morgan in November saw the club mutually agree to terminate the 37-year-old’s huge contract during the World Cup, a tournament Ronaldo’s Portugal struggled to impress at ahead of crashing out to Morocco.

United on Wednesday evening played their first competitive game since Ronaldo's exit, beating Burnley in the Carabao Cup to reach the quarter-finals, and ahead of the game United issued a short statement on the player formerly considered possibly the greatest of all time.

Placed in the 'Worth Knowing' section of the United Review programme, it read: "Cristiano Ronaldo left the club by mutual agreement last month.

"The Portuguese superstar scored 145 goals across two spells and 436 appearances, and helped us win three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Ronaldo was also crowned Ballon d'Or winner in 2008.

"In a statement on November 22, the club put on record its gratitude for Cristiano's immense contribution and wished him and his family well for the future."
