Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag explains Luke Shaw decision as Amad sends message

Here are your Manchester United morning headlines on Tuesday, January 3.

Ten Hag explains why Shaw is playing at centre back

Luke Shaw's pace ensured he started at centre-back for the second Manchester United match running against Wolves.

Shaw had volunteered to play at centre half in the League Cup win over Burnley when Harry Maguire was out through illness but Ten Hag opted for Casemiro. Shaw was selected next to Raphael Varane for the Premier League win over Nottingham Forest as Victor Lindelof was unwell. Lindelof and Maguire were both on the bench for the Premier League victory at Wolves, where Shaw continued next to Varane, and the England international excelled again.

Shaw played in central defence in a back three on a number of high-profile occasions under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, helping United to wins over Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain but also suffering defeats to Barcelona and Liverpool. The Forest was match was the first time he had started in a defensive partnership.

"Of course, you have your ideas and a plan but sometimes it changes by circumstances like the illnesses for Harry and Victor," Ten Hag said. "Normally, they start in the games we have just played, but then Casemiro did well as a centre half (against Burnley) and then Luke Shaw did very well against Nottingham Forest.

Amad comments on Bruno Fernandes’ Instagram post

Manchester United youngster Amad has reacted to Bruno Fernandes’ Instagram post to indicate he is very much tracking the progress of his parent club while out on loan at Sunderland.

The forward is enjoying his best form since his 2020 switch to United from Atalanta, having scored six times in his last 11 outings for the Black Cats. His performances have got Reds fans excited with hopes that he will become a valuable first-team player in future years.

The Manchester Evening News revealed in November that United see a future for Amad at the club, and that they have also inserted a recall clause in his contract. While going from strength to strength at the Stadium of Light, Amad seems to be keeping a close eye on Old Trafford, making sure to stay in touch with teammates.

Following New Year Eve’s 1-0 win over Wolves, Fernandes posted a celebratory message on Instagram. He wrote: "A very good victory to finish the year. Happy new year everyone." Amad reacted by commenting: "Bruno Bruno".
