Man United and Man City's Portugal stars suffer World Cup heartbreak vs Morocco as Dalot suffers injury scare

Manchester United and Manchester City's Portuguese stars will all be returning to England after Fernando Santos' side lost to Morocco in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Diogo Dalot- who appeared to go off with a hamstring injury in the second half - and Bruno Fernandes started for Portugal, while City stars Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva were both included in the starting line-up as well.

Former Reds frontman Cristiano Ronaldo came off the bench in the second period, but he was unable to impact the game as the European outfit exited the tournament in Qatar after losing 1-0 to Morocco.

Ronaldo was once again named among the substitutes by Santos, with Goncalo Ramos, who scored a hat-trick in the last round, starting ahead of the 37-year-old.

It was a nightmare first-half for Portugal as they went 1-0 down shortly before the half-time break. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa made a shocking error as he attempted to claim a cross - leaving Youssef En-Nesyri to head the ball into an empty net after failing to collect the inviting delivery.

Shortly after the goalkeeper's mistake, the camera panned to Ronaldo on the bench. The former United frontman took a sharp intake of breath as he looked stunned at the manner in which Portugal had conceded.

The four United and City players were left on until the final whistle, but neither of them were able to find a winner as Santos' men failed to break down a stubborn Morocco defence, who were reduced to 10-men late on in the clash when Walid Cheddira was sent off. The African side will now play the winner of England against France in the World Cup semi-final.

For Dalot and Fernandes, they will return to Old Trafford ahead of United's first competitive match back after the break, which comes against Burnley in the Carabao Cup on December 21. Meanwhile, Dias and Bernardo will be in contention to play against Liverpool, also in the Carabao Cup, on December 22.
