Man to front ACT Supreme Court over axe attack

A man who is alleged to have viciously attacked a woman with an axe while she slept has been committed to stand trial in the ACT Supreme Court.

The 22-year-old man is charged with attempted murder and using an offensive weapon to cause grievous bodily harm.

The incident occurred in March last year while the man was staying with the woman at her home in Wanniassa in Canberra's south.

The 24-year-old female is alleged to have woken up with a large gash across the back of her neck, which police believe was inflicted by an axe.

Today in the ACT Magistrates Court, Magistrate Grant Lalor said he was satisfied there was sufficient evidence for the man to stand trial in the ACT Supreme Court.

He will appear in court next month.

Editor's note 6/12/22: In a judge-alone hearing, Justice Terence Higgins found that there was "reasonable doubt as to the guilt of the accused", due to the possibility of the involvement of a third person. Justice Higgins found the man not guilty.
