The North East Ambulance Service confirmed that a man had been taken to hospital with leg injuries following the crash.

A spokeswoman said: "We were called at 7:03 this morning to a road traffic collision involving a motorbike and a car.

"We sent an ambulance and a rapid response paramedic and took a male patient to the RVI with a leg injury."

In a statement made while crews remained at the scene, a Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Our crews attended the scene of a two vehicle RTC on the Great North Road this morning."

The force also urged road users to be cautious adding: "Remember and think, vulnerable road users still use the roads early morning too."

The crash led to some disruption on public transport with all Stagecoach 30 and 31 buses unable to service any stops on the Great North Road while the nearby road remained closed.

Forsyth Road has now re-opened in both directions and traffic has returned to normal.
