Man stabbed with screwdriver in Bristol Harbourside bust-up

A confrontation at Bristol Harbourside resulted in a man being stabbed with a screwdriver. Paul Collins became involved in the row with Steven Durose, Bristol Crown Court heard.

The court was told Mr Durose was the "principal aggressor" in mutual combat which followed. But it ended after Collins grabbed a screwdriver from his bag and stabbed Mr Durose in his abdomen.

Collins, 51, of Bath Road, Bristol, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding in February. He appeared via video link from custody for sentence on Thursday (July 7, 2022).

Judge Michael Longman jailed him for 12 months. He told Collins: "The incident was initiated by Mr Durose. You did use the screwdriver against him when there was an element of self-defence - but, plainly, it was excessive use of force."

Ramin Pakrooh, prosecuting, said the day after being stabbed Mr Durose went to hospital, were medics saw he had a puncture wound which had partially closed and caused no internal damage. No treatment was deemed necessary.

Collins had some 53 previous offences for some 185 offences, the court heard. These include sex offences, public order offences and violent offences including assaults on emergency workers.

Peter Binder, defending, said: "Mr Durose was younger, larger and stronger. He was in many ways the principal aggressor.

"He simply would not back off and leave the area, despite Mr Collins efforts to get him to go. Mr Durose struck Mr Collins a number of times."
