A man has died after being stabbed multiple times during an altercation on a street in northern Tasmania, with three men in custody over the incident.
Tasmania Police say they were called to Lambert Street in George Town, north of Launceston, about 8:30pm on Saturday.
They received a report of an argument between four people, believed to be friends, on the street.
Tasmania Police Detective Inspector Melanie Groves said a 34-year-old man from Mount Direction was found on a pathway on the side of the road with multiple stab wounds.
"He was provided medical assistance but sadly died at the scene," she said.
"Our thoughts are with his family and friends."
Detective Inspector Groves said a knife was used but police have not yet located it.
"Police have multiple resources that have been deployed to multiple scenes in relation to this investigation," she said.
Two men were taken into police custody on Sunday afternoon, and a third was detained as he was allegedly waiting to board a plane to leave the state, police said.
Two police tents were set up on a nature strip outside a house in the street and forensic personnel have been searching other properties.
Detectives have been going door-to-door to interview neighbours.
Anyone with information has been urged to come forward.
"Police would like to thank the community for their assistance as we carry out our investigations," Detective Inspector Groves said.
