Man spent hours 'throwing slates off roof' of apartment building

A man who was on the roof of an apartment building for hours was "throwing slates".

Officers were called at 6.10am today after a man was on the roof of the Picturehouse on Scotland Road. A number of roads in the surrounding area were forced to close including Wilbraham Street, at the junction of Great Homer Street to the Jennifer Street retail park, off Scotland Road.

According to an ECHO reporter who was at the scene, the man had been "throwing slates off the roof of the building". Pictures of the scene showed the man sitting on the ledge behind the red chimney-like structure of the building, reportedly "talking on his phone".

A police negotiator could be seen talking to the man through a skylight. A number of fire engines, police cars, vans and ambulances were all visible at the scene.

At around 9.30am, the man came down from the roof and was in a waiting ambulance vehicle. The road has been reopened to traffic heading out of city, but was still closed to incoming traffic.

At around 7.45am today, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that officers are currently on Scotland Road following reports of a male on the roof of an apartment building. Officers attended at the Picturehouse at 6.10am today, Monday, July 11.

"Road closures are currently in place in the surrounding area while the matter is being dealt with. Diversions are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area."
