A shocking incident unfolded near the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton, Washington, when a man was shot by his girlfriend's estranged husband during a custody swap. The victim, a 21-year-old man, and his 31-year-old girlfriend were at the fairgrounds to hand over the woman's eight-year-old son to her 40-year-old husband, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office.
The situation took a violent turn when the husband, who had followed his wife back to the meeting spot, drove by and opened fire on the couple. The victim and his girlfriend attempted to flee in their vehicle, but the husband pursued them, shooting at their car as they drove along Nelson Road.
The dangerous chase culminated in a head-on collision between the husband's vehicle and the victim's car. Both men exited their vehicles and engaged in a heated confrontation, during which the husband brandished a .22 caliber handgun and shot the boyfriend in the abdomen.
A witness intervened by kicking the gun away and keeping it secure until law enforcement arrived. The husband and boyfriend then ended up fighting in a ditch, where a deputy eventually found the boyfriend holding the husband down in a headlock.
The injured boyfriend was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center for treatment, while the husband was taken to St. Michael's Medical Center. Fortunately, the woman and her child emerged from the incident unharmed.
Following the altercation, the husband was arrested and booked into Kitsap County Jail on charges of first-degree assault and drive-by shooting. He is currently being held without bail as the investigation into the incident continues.
