A man has been shot dead by police after brandishing a gun at officers in Queensland's north.

A 39-year-old NSW man was shot by officers outside a motel on Greenhill Rd in Ilbilbie, a small town about 75km south of Mackay, at about 11am on Monday.

Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said police were carrying out a targeted drug operation at the location.

The man was wanted for several offences and police intended to arrest him, Superintendent Graeme Paine said.

After arriving at the motel, police were approaching a car in the car park when the man got into the vehicle.

Officers then moved in for the arrest.

The man allegedly pulled out a gun while police were trying to pull him out of the car, leading to officers shooting him.

"Their life was threatened," Ms Carroll said.

Officers provided medical assistance before paramedics arrived but the man died from his injuries.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the shooting.

The officer's actions will be investigated by the Ethical Standards Command and will be overseen by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
