Police have shot dead a man in Newcastle after he allegedly stabbed an officer with a knife.

The man died at the scene and has yet to be identified.

Police said they were called to a home in Wickham just before 8am on Friday, after reports of “an earlier stealing”.

On arrival, two constables were allegedly threatened by a man armed with a knife. One officer was allegedly stabbed in the chest, while another suffered injuries to her hands.

Both officers are in a serious but stable condition, and were taken to John Hunter hospital.

In a statement, New South Wales police said a critical incident investigation is under way.

“A critical incident team comprised of officers from state crime command’s homicide squad will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the discharge of a police firearm.”

“That investigation will be subject to independent review.”
