"The victim was given life-saving treatment at the scene by police officers and paramedics after receiving stab injuries. He was taken to hospital where his condition is described as serious but stable. Detectives are currently working on a number of lines of enquiry."
Inspector Richard Flanagan, of GMP's City of Manchester district, said: "There is a scene in place while officers carry out an investigation into the incident.
"We believe this to be an isolated and random incident that has resulted from a road traffic incident when a number of offenders have left a vehicle to attack the victim.
"We are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the incident or who has any information - they should contact police quoting log 3350-08/04/2023."
