A Washington state man has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison for his involvement in the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. The man, identified as a leader in orchestrating the attack on police officers guarding the Capitol, was captured on videos playing a prominent role during the riot.
The man, who represented himself in court with an attorney on standby, was seen using a megaphone to lead other rioters in charging against a police line, barking commands, and shouting directions for overpowering officers. The U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth emphasized the man's leadership role in the mob and sentenced him to seven years and three months behind bars.
The man, who has expressed rhetoric inspired by the anti-government 'sovereign citizen' movement, was convicted of felony charges after a trial in Washington, D.C. Prosecutors had recommended a nine-year prison sentence, highlighting his role in organizing and encouraging the assault on officers at the Capitol.
During the riot, the man was one of the first to chase a group of police officers retreating up stairs outside the Capitol. He was seen shouting and gesturing for other rioters to prepare to attack. The man also shoved a metal barricade into a line of police officers and grabbed an officer's arm.
Despite being jailed since November 2023, the man has not shown sincere remorse or accepted responsibility for his actions on January 6. Justice Department prosecutor Courtney Howard noted his lack of remorse and attempts to portray himself as a victim.
The judge, Lamberth, emphasized that there is no room for political violence in the country and highlighted the seriousness of the man's crimes. Over 800 individuals involved in the Capitol riot have been sentenced, with terms ranging from several days to 22 years.
