Man says he 'deserves' plane window seat and deliberately 'got angry'

Plane seat allocation has caused countless arguments over the years. Passengers vie for the most legroom, access to empty overhead cabins and seats with space to spread out.

So is it ok to demand to swap your seat? And how far can you push it?

Now, one man has caused a renewed debate over plane etiquette. He became angry over being denied his preferred window seat – because he felt like he 'deserved' it.

After a mix-up with bookings, he was was left with "a seat he didn't want", and when he tried to get someone to move he was left hanging, with people just giving him "seriously angry looks".

Taking to Reddit to complain about his experience, the unnamed man wrote: "I'm on a plane but I wanted a window seat and so I asked the person who had the window seat, whether I could have it. He wouldn't allow it and I couldn't believe it, I tried paying for a window seat but something went wrong, and I had a seat which I didn't want.

"It was the [the company's] fault for messing up the seating situation, and so I thought I deserve a window seat. I complained and the guy sitting next to the window wouldn't budge, and I know other people in the aeroplane were giving me serious angry looks but I didn't give a s***.

"I started complaining to the plane stewards and stewardesses, and they were just telling me to sit down at my seat. I kept complaining about how it was the company's fault for messing up the seating system, as I booked a window seat.

"I kept demanding that they give me the window seat of my choice. I can tell everyone on the aeroplane were preferring a baby crying compared to a grown man complaining."

The man doubled down and insisted that he wanted a window seat as they are the "best seats", explaining that the only downside to them was when you need to use the toilet and disturb the whole row. But the man next to him wouldn't budge – so the seething passenger thought the best thing to do was to keep asking until the bloke became "angry."

He continued: "I kept asking the guy whether he could just swap seats with me and he kept saying no, and so I kept asking. At one point he became angry and I just started smiling."

The name of the airline was not mentioned by the man. The problem of seat allocation has caused a few upsets recently.

In February, WaleOnline reported that a man who paid for extra legroom with his seat on a long-haul plane flight told of his annoyance when he boarded the flight to realise an elderly couple had decided to sit in his and his partner’s seats. The baffled passenger also explained his frustration on chat forum Reddit, telling of how his drawn-out argument with the couple who’d tried to take his seats hadn’t gone down well with fellow passengers and made for an awkward 13-hour journey.

He said::"We booked and paid for our flights and I added the premium economy seats as I’m 6’ 3'' and wanted extra legroom. It cost an extra $60 (£50)"
