The man was attacked near the Salford Precinct, in an alleyway off Mather Way, at around 11pm last night (Wednesday). Police and paramedics were called to the scene.

Detectives believe the attack was 'targeted'. Officers are now trying to track down the male suspect.

Last night, Greater Manchester Police put a Section 60 order in place for the area covering the shopping centre and surrounding streets. This gives police the power to stop-and-search anyone for weapons 'without suspicion'.

The order - which covers Nursery Street, Seedley Road, Fitzwarren Street, Heywood Way, Hankinson Way, Belvedere Road and the A6 - will remain in place throughout today. Patrols have also been stepped up in the area.

Detective Inspector Steve Hughes said: "We understand that members of the local community are going to concerned regarding this incident, but we do believe that it is a targeted attack and there is no threat to the wider community.

A section 60 order has been put in place in this area (GMP)

"However, there will be an increased police presence over the next few days, as we endeavour to trace the offender and bring him into custody. We have also implemented a S60 for the next few hours (see map), which allows us to stop and search people or vehicles for weapons.

"We are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage of the area at the time of the offence. We urge anyone who may be able to assist us to contact us via 101 quoting log number 004277-28062023. Information can also be passed anonymously via the independent charity - Crimestoppers - on 0800 555 111 or via the Live Chat function on our website www.gmp.police.uk."
